I did my first post free dealer oil change a couple months ago and did not have the cap wrench so I did not change the filter. I thought to myself that I could just go 5K miles to the next oil change (versus the 10K).

Well after 5K right on queue my maintenance light came on (overall 55K miles) so I am now wondering if somehow my truck sensed dirtier oil and knew I did not change the filter ?

some of this, a little of that
did you reset your maintenance reminder when you did your oil change? Check your manual it will have all the info on how to reset the light.

To my knowledge there is no oil cleanliness sensor.

    None as of yet
the truck is on a 5k service schedule. every 5k the light will come on to remind you to rotate tires and do an inspection and 10k for oil changes. The manual has the service schedule laid out for you.

What Jester said. I have to reset mine nearly every time the dealer changes my oil. They never seem to remember.

    Loud as hell URD exhaust!
It is based on miles driven and will appear even if you change the filter.

Filter is more important to change than the oil. Changing the oil without the filter is pretty useless.
