I find my rpm's go up to around 1200 when going to N from R or D. rpm's are around 5-750 when in D or R. I'm thinking trans flush with new screen (filter) Grease all zerks on drive shaft, and maybe throttle body cleaning, I got an emissions error code a while back but nothing lately. I too can defiantly hear it but only while inside cab. I've recently changed diff fluid and trans case. Not too sure where to go from here though I've looked all over the web, Haynes, alldatadiy, and no luck

Thanks gearcruncher, this and all the other transmission info is a tremendous resource. I've scoured these links before, and found something about "harsh engagement, from N to D or R" that kick, seems pretty "harsh" the troubleshooting spoke of line pressure. I'm assuming trans oil lines? Could this be due to overfill? Clogged (filter/screen) creating pressure when trans is trying to push oil through screen? Or something different? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated, I'd post the info that I read but I just got on the forum and don't know how

Line pressure is created by your transmission pump and the pressure regulator inside the valve body .
Start with the basics . You are probably due for a throttle body cleaning . There is a write up with pictures within that link I provided above to show you how to do it .
Tune up stuff first and then we can look at the transmission if the tune up doesnt help .

My 2003 has had that hard slam into gear thing since I rolled it off the lot brand new, asked the Toyota Mechanic about it right away he said it was normal. I just went over 100,000 miles never changed the transmission fluid yet, never had a breakdown, never been stuck, went rock climbing the first week I had it, MT Bierstad, CO to the top, pulled trailers, etc. Its a great truck great design. 13 years old still slams into gear.

I came here to check whether there is a filter or not, the current mechanic I was getting a quote from said, "No." he wants $208 and he isn't gonna drop the pan? How does one verify a filter replacement when paying for it to be done? any serial numbers I can look for on the reclaimed parts?
Further, the magnets inside the pan...is there any reason to add some serious neodymium magnets in there as an extra precaution to pull tiny shavings from the transmission over time. I just happen to have a large roll of those magnets laying around. They are so strong if you let two come together you'll spend hours trying to get them apart unless you have a spacer.

I would like to know about the magnets too. From the videos I have seen they look pretty dinky.I have some stronger about the size of a domino at my job in infinite supply that would collect much better I would think.

Hate for revive a dead thread, but I face the same issue. I have cleaned my throttle body thoroughly and running a synthetic mix currently, going full synthetic on my next flush. Changing out the trans filter and that should fix the clunk?

is the idle speed normal? Is the throttle valve cable adjusted correctly?

I'll have to check the manufacturer specs. Haven't looked or checked that yet!
