The Insane Asylum DCLB build and XJ insanity

So I Figured I would start my own build thread here. Here is essentially how she looks after I bought her back in Jan. minus the weather tech vent visors.

I guess I should give a little overview of why I chose the DCLB and what my plans are for the truck. First off I like the utilitarian use of a "normal" sized bed. Secondly I am a scout leader and this truck needs to haul a good amount of gear and trailers. Also I want as much storage as possible for my travels. I am coming from a F350 crew cab dually so this truck is tiny in comparison. I don't plan on nor want to turn this truck into a full on trail rig. This is going to be a rig that is just as comfortable off road as it is on. Not looking to do the hardest trails in the world but I do like a challenge.

Now that I have gotten quite a bit of seat time offroad in the truck I do plan on building a dedicated trail rig at some point as I see the fun and abilities of one to go much further than our trucks could ever dream.

May 2017: F. brakes pads, rotors, and DS caliper, clean and adj. rear brakes
Aug 2017: Leafs replaced under TSB/Recall, Both hub bearings, F&R diff gear oil, T-case gear oil, Transmission fld, oil change done

Apr 2018: Frame replaced under recall along with a slew of other things in the recall
I know I am missing a couple of oil changes to this point going off memory, going to keep a better log moving forward.

Ok from this point on I promise to update this more often. But I do maint./repairs so frequently I forget.


The day I got it





Here she is hauling a 24' did well total weight trailer and gear was around 4500lb mark. Surprisingly enough this truck was more stable than some of my previous trucks hauling this big of a trailer and didn't get blown around badly at all. Which was a concern of mine.

What she looks like currently

 

Installed Total Chaos bedside reinforcements. Oh and those wood roof racks where custom made by me as well 6ft length to carry kayaks/canoes and a couple of paddle boards vertically. They are more for function than form have to be able to haul scouts around and load gear. They work well too!!!

Gearing

 

Didn your shell come with tracks and you attached the custom built racks to those? Or did you attach the racks to the shell itself?

 

Then thanks to @HomerTaco this came in the mail. Installed it today as well. Trying to figure out what I should for the lettering. Yota would be a tribute to a buddy of mines old 80's Toyota pickup. His was on Dana 60s, exoskeleton cage SBC, TH400, atlas t-case, running 40's. We all nicknamed him and the truck Yota because he was able to use the force to do things with that truck we thought impossible. It stuck and soon Toyota was dropped to yota on his badges. And Yes my 4 yr old daughter is helping me place the lettering.

Here it is grille installed. I have the '11 TRD factory smoked headlights these are just not cutting it any more!

 

Came in the mail today. Sway bar relocators, CB drop, and Icon tubular A-arms with their new icon ball joint. I wanted to go that route with the ball joint because I have experience with running Uni-balls and heim joints etc on a street car and just not that enjoyable to me so I thought what the heck I'll try them out and see if they are worth their salt. I will give a review once I get some miles and trail time in on them.

Hopefully if all the parts arrive on time the plan is to go over to my buddy's garage and install them on the 8th, fingers crossed on this one otherwise we will have to postpone for a few weeks. I have some plate to do a cmc then as well going to make my own fillers and am looking at doing it differently than what I have seen so far. Tires will be mounted next week and the windows get tinted next wed. as well.
These brake lines from @HeadStrong Off-Road are some of the nicest I have seen in for any platform and I have installed and used a ton of different ones. Plus I must say their customer service and communication is top notch. The Bilsteins are typical nice looking quality, I have extensive experience with Bilsteins in the past so that's a big reason I went with them.

 

So these arrived today.

These are the Deaver stage 3 Expedition springs thought I'd try these out over the typical Dakar HDs with the extra leaf added. I must say ordering these from @HeadStrong Off-Road was a pleasure and free shipping as well. I will say I was expecting a little nicer quality paint and finish work for their cost they seem to be on par with the Dakars and what HS had to say about them in their thread. That being said it still isn't that big of a deal for me because they are not going to stay pretty for long regardless.


Genuine Toyota TRD Sport black headlights the photo doesnt really show how dark the black is it almost looks like a black chrome I think this looks better than the blacked out aftermarket versions or the stock BHLM. Plus personally from having and installing a ton of aftermarket headlights the OE stuff is always much higher quality.

Did my BHLM this morning via '11 TRD headlights looks much better now! With the grill from @HomerTaco and these headlights I think it makes the truck really looks good now.

Installed the lift today. Sorry I didn't get many pics during the install but I think that's been done enough so people have an idea of what an install looks like. We had a little trouble but nothing to hard to overcome. I do have a slight rubbing on full lock hard to tell where when we finally finished in the dark. So a daylight diagnosis will have to do. Both factory bump stops snapped had to drill them out and through bolt them no biggie. Will be getting an alignment tomorrow morning. I must say I was a little worried I would have a pretty decent rake but in reality i don't have hardly any at all. The Bilstein 6112 with the toytec aluminum mounts gave a true 3 in lift and worked great. The rear Deaver U402 expedition springs in the 700+ variety really ride extremely well for the 50 mile ride home tonight I thought they would be a lot rougher but not really much harsher than factory. So far from the ride home I am really impressed at how well the suspension and tires handle. With no alignment done yet I was surprised that it didn't have any adverse effects for the ride home and can get it all dialed in tomorrow.

The one picture I got during the install will get an after tomorrow and post it up. Yes I know there is some rust but I am going to take care of that hopefully soon and make the frame all nice looking again it looks a lot worse than it really is.

I took a trip to Blue Ridge Overland Gear. They have a lot of good stuff for organizing and outfitting, plus I wanted to take a look at the James Baroud rtt which they are a dealer of. I like the idea of a hard shell clam shell style of tent vs the flip top. Also they are the ones contracted to be the manufacturer of the deadman off-road earth anchor. Seeing their attention to detail and their products being made first hand I believe their products as well as the deadman are extremely well made.

I got to see these being made.

Sorry for the finger in the picture. I am still working on the placement of the different pouches and I need to remove the tags Even the tags are super high quality they feel like they are made of the same material warning tags are made for missiles and our jet fighters. Not super cheap gear but not overly expensive either. I think it is a good value for the price and quality. They were super low on stock because overland expo east essentially depleted their whole inventory. If you guys watch Mountain State Overland on youtube Jason had something made called the Taco attic made for his rig and now it is a production item. I was told it should be back in production this week and on the website this week.
