Not quirky but very shift happy. Enough to cause a HUGE deal on this forum. Some members have mentioned it is their biggest regret with the truck is the auto trans. Test drive one and see if you can deal with how it shifts---esp on the highways.

Quirky. Also a lot of the 16's came with low fluid from the factory causing some shifting issues but were fixed by the dealership.

I have no issues with my auto. I initially wanted the manual but didn't want to mess with the clutch while wheeling.

The auto has 2 overdrive gears and is known to downshift on highways.

I find nothing wrong with Auto in my truck. In town I use 5th gear for highest gear. On highway I run sixth an enjoy fuel mileage.

Other things aside, I would try to find one without dealer accessories. They are overpriced and can add up quick. My SR5 had only one option, the factory tow package (which i wanted). There were several comparable SR5s on the lot that were $1500 more because of add-ons like running boards, mud flaps, paint protector, exhaust tips, etc.. You can add better accessories for much less post purchase.

agree, get tow package and bed mat. dont get factory tonneau or weather mats. after market is better. i do advocate for the non-jbl tech package. if you dont like non-jbl speakers you can upgrade youself for cheaper than jbl

The cheapest models don't come with basic creature comforts like cruise control and intermittent windshield wipers and still sticker around $25,000. For $25,000 you will get a nice truck you like. For another $12,000 you get a badass truck you will love and get many "nice truck" comments on. I would never buy another manual transmission in any vehicle.

I'm a simple guy, thus my moniker. I bought the "Cheaper model" knowing that I'd most likely be removing existing parts and upgrading them to suit my needs. Tacos are cool, having more money is also cool.

Find a truck the suits your needs and budget

My two cents. I had a 2017 SR5 V6. Great little truck for all intents and purposes. While the tranny operated as designed and so did the engine, it was something I thought I would learn to "deal with". I did for a while till I drove another truck. It instantly reminded me of how a truck should operate. I traded immediately and am happy as can be in my new ride. Don't settle for something. You will regret it in the long run. I kept my first truck for 14 years, I just couldn't see me doing the same with the Taco. Good luck on whatever you decide.

I regret the purchase. Wait until they fix the trans and engine, rear differential issues (howling and leaking), and the vibrations and buzzy brake pedals.

If you can wait for the Ford ranger and the new frontier you'll have more options and I'm guessing they'll all start stepping up their game.

don't worry, it will not be long when you don't have a choice to get a manual. Oh and if it wasn't for the manual trans offered in the taco, I bet a good chunk of taco sales would be nonexistent.
