So, I've got a bunch of 6+ foot fishing rods that I store in my truck. Only problem is that I have the 5 foot bed so I have to put them in sideways. I do have a tonneau cover and a factory roof rack. What's my best option here? Note that I store the rods in the truck, so theft could be an issue.

Whenever I go out, I stick them through the back window. Mainly because they get all tangled when they're in the bed.

I know it's been discussed before, but I'd like some fresh opinions.

If you're storing them in the truck, in plain sight, theft will ALWAYS be a possibility. Id say leave them in the bed with tonneau closed. Figure out a way to stop the tangle. Out of site, out of mind. Other option is a custom made rack, and run a steel braided cable through them, but you'll have to remove the tonneau cover.

I use these Velcro "cable management straps" on my fishing rods. One on each pole to keep the line from tangling with others, and then I use them to strap my poles to the factory Toyota hooks in the bed rails. Keeps 'em from flopping around and easy to get at.

A buddy of mine does the same thing, but with those fuzzy pipe cleaner sticks, to attach his poles to the hooks in the bed of his F150.

I have the 6' bed though, and Leer shell. With the 5' bed, maybe pop off the last leg off the rod so it'll fit length-wise?

Those might work, but I think I'm going for something hard rather than Velcro. The rods don't telescope or break down.

Could also consider locking ski racks. That's how I carry my surf rods but they are also 11-12 ft.

Yep just like Chase8059 said, I also use roof mounted Yakima ski racks. I've had the same set for 20 years on 3 different vehicles. Carried skis, wood trim, fishing poles, kayak paddles, long conduit and much more. Doesn't get any easier.

Nice! I still have a few snowboards. No clue where in Texas I'll used them.

On a side note, I think once I get to building a roof rack for my shell I'm going to integrate some fishing rod holders inside the shell. I usually fish the lagoon/ saltwater and for specs and reds so 6'6" to 7'6" rods will fit fine inside the cap diagonally.

That's a great idea. I'm on a pretty tight budget right now as far as things I buy for the truck goes. A lot of the shit I use for fishing and other outdoors activities is getting worn out and ready to replace. Truck comes second.=

If you look around, somewhere there's a thread where a guy used common hardware and a garage hook for yard rakes and shovels and adapted them into the bed slots. Could probably just make some risers and use that system. Or just get one of these rod holders. Comes with a free tent. 20170810_214227.jpg

Here's my setup. Without bed cover*. If I wanted to secure the rods from potential theft, I'd rig it so that each individual rod had a cord that wrapped around the rod or the reel itself and back to rod holder and was secured tightly. Or I'd get a small bike lock and loop it behind all three reels, in front of the bottom of each side rod holder and behind the bottom of the middle rod holder. See pictures. Hope this helps.

You could also mount the type of rod holders I have horizontally on top of the roof rack so that the rods point backwards and are parrell to the ground. If secured in the way I described above, it wouldn't require removal of the bed cover and would be secured by some sort of lock, be it a bike lock or cable with end loops and a small code lock. Thanks for getting me thinking OP .

Cool concept, but for $200+ For a rod holder, imagine the tackle and gear you could buy. My system cost me all of $50 Walmart rod holders + stainless hardware from Ace. And that's for 9 rod holders. But that seems to be a good option if you have the money.

If you are laying them somewhere in the bed of your truck buy some rod sock or rod sleeves. That WILL stop the tangling. I promise.
