Long-bed vs Short-bed

From the pictures I see here, looks like there are A LOT more short-beds than long-beds.
I wanted a long bed for hauling bikes/kayaks/wood etc. I suppose short-beds are better on the trail.

How'd you decide which to get?

 

Short bed. They don't make a manual double cab, long bed. Had to sacrafice somewhere, and I like 3 pedals.

 

I actually use my box, therefore long box makes way more sense.

 

I wanted 4 doors, and you can haul a dirtbike with the tailgate down. So DCSB for my current truck.

10 years later I no longer need 4 doors but would like a longer bed, so next truck will be an access cab.

Only you can determine which configuration will be the best for you.

 

Have had both, with the shortbed I always wished for more room. Now that I have a longbed I've never thought I had too much.

I wanted a long bed, but decided manual was more important to me.

If I have to haul anything that won't fit in my short bed, I have an enclosed trailer and an open trailer.

 

Shortbed will probably fit in the garage, not important to me but it might be to the OP.

 

I decided that I am a man, so I need a long bed. To do man stuff that non-manly men do not do.

 

I think the long bed is great, especially for camping. A Softopper is waaay cheaper than a rooftop tent. The DCLB does look a bit stretched from some angles though.

 

Long bed looks better too. The body curve on the door flows into the bed unlike the SB which looks terrible imho

 

Shortbed does look a bit "nubby", especially with the longer nose.

Longbed looks like a proper truck.



And the longbed is harder to find on the lots because they're so damn desireable.

 

I hauled several pieces of t111 and drywall with no issues this week. Short bed.

Access cab was my goal. Long bed is only option. Works great for kayaks, bikes, home improvement store runs. If I camped, it would have a cap and sleeping system.

 

LB ALL DAY LONG !

 

I had a LB on my 2005. It was very useful, but I thought the truck looked really long for how narrow it is, was harder to park in town than a mid-size should be. The space was good but to be honest I haven't run into any haul jobs yet that my SB hasn't been fine for. I haul my moto on a trailer and have a topper for the hounds and to keep other stuff dry, so the SB works perfectly for me. Shorter on the trail has been a bonus, too. YMMV.

 

LB. It's a personal preference. Someone said 1 in 10 are LB's. To my eye the proportions look nicer. Weefek pointed out the part I think looks goofy on SB. To each his own though.

 

If I needed a long bed DC I'd have bought a 1/2 ton. The only reason to buy a Tacoma is for the smaller size and the DCLB's are just as long as a DC 1/2 ton with less interior room.

The problem with long beds on these trucks is payload capacity. We don't have much anyway and with the heavier long bed you have even less. I only have 1200 lbs of payload. Once 2 adults and other gear along with my cap is on the truck I'm limited to about 600 lbs max in the bed, with 3 or 4 adults even less.

If it won't fit in my bed, I have a 5'X10' trailer which is bigger than an 8' bed on a 3/4 ton. I've put 6000 lbs on it and the truck pulls it easily.

 

Manual was far more important than the long bed, but in a perfect world I’d have gotten both.

 

I figured a 6 foot bed would be better for taking something with the Honda ski and trailer.
