wrecked truck, bought it back from insurance. 90% done with rebuild and the brakes are locking up after a few hundred feet. i am being told that it is the brake booster/abs module. have tried calling local (and not so local) wrecking yards, but they have yet to have one (apparently the 6 speed manuals are pretty rare at wrecking yards.....probably because people like me that want a manual refuse to let them go even after they are wrecked).

was able to find the entire assembly new on the east coast, but its 5 days shipping and costs nearly 2 grand with my buddies discount.

anyone have any ideas of where to find one of these bastards????

@Grable Did you look on eBay? Lots of dismantlers on there. I've gotten a few things that way. If you have exact part number search that works well since not all of them plug in vehicle fit into eBay search

I hate to be a Debbie Downer, but what if you spend a bunch of money on one and that doesn't solve the problem? Surely there must be some kind of diagnostics on that thing.

if i spend a bunch of money and it isnt the problem.....then my mechanics ass is going to be the one not getting paid since he is the one who did all the diagnostic and testing and swears it is that and cant be anything else. hes the one ordering and paying for the part initially. i believe my exact words were....."so what if we spend 2 grand and that doesnt fix the problem? because im not paying for you to guess on my dime asshole" (we are good friends. yes we talk to each other like that)

You could eliminating it and just running a manual proportioning valve. But I'm guessing you want to keep your abs

Use some thing like that that allows you to restrict pressure to the rear to prevent them from locking up. (Front does most of your braking)

I've seen some build threads with some guys using them. (They were eliminating the abs) I don't know of any names off hand. I'd say ask your mechanic friend if he'd be comfortable with doing it since it seems he would be the one installing it.

It's more of a solution for a permenate fix to eliminate the unit so idk if it's worth the trouble/effort for a temporary fix

Just figured I'd throw the idea out there for something to look into as an alternative.

Remember: The Off Road 4WD TRD (ONLY) has the Hydraulic Brake Booster (for the A-TRAC system)... all other Tacomas have a vacuum brake booster.

is that what it is? i was led to believe it was only the 6 speed transmission may have been the reason for its rarity. but if all i have to do is find a 2010 or 11 TRD 4WD in the junkyard to save myself a ton of money, then thats doable (while it still may be difficult to find....a lot less rare than a 6 spd manual off road 4wd trd.

Well, I am not a Toyota Tech mechanic, just telling you what I know of the unique nature of our boosters. You should have a factory trained tech on your side. We are lucky here in Southern California, as we have Jason "SpeedFreek" to help us!

    You do have A-TRAC, yes?
A-TRAC requires the hydraulic brake booster to work.
Only the OFF ROAD TRD (standard from 2009+) has this... not the SPORT TRD or any other model.
