Would the "E" series be an equivalent to the Image Dynamics IDMax series?

Box/enclosure design makes the biggest difference. I have modeled/built a good amount of enclosures for sundown subs and the way they model strays away from the recommended enclosure sizes. Granted these models are 4th orders, 6th orders, t-lines and even horns on two occasions...the sealed and ported enclosures I have modeled/built most times come out bigger than recommended for the best response. The sa will sound more musical than the e series because the size of enclosure needed for the e series to over perform is bigger than what most people would care to use...so they end up in smaller enclosures. The sa is optimized more than the e series so sticking an e series in a smaller box versus the sa series in the "max recommended" box will yield better results for the sa. The point is I have personally modeled/built boxes for the e and sd series (see my six sd2 8s above) and except for the cone/surround makeup most people couldn't tell it wasn't the sa subs. To be fair, I did say anything above the e and sd series is performance gains. Performance isn't necessarily spl.

JL could very well be in another league sq wise but I wouldn't say they are the only ones. There are many other subs in existence, though little known, that will make the JL look like a slouch. One in particular is the DIYMA Reference 12. Heck dayton and morels have been used in HT for many years. The price point of the sundowns is cheap compared to JL but with right box you can get more cone area and a more efficient setup with even better sq for the price. The sub is not the only determining factor...though everyone's opinion on sub sq is different.

In the end, for the price and performance point of sundown subs you really want to (and should with any sub) get a box modeled specifically for it. Modeling and "building to spec" are two different worlds.

Replacing an RE Rex 8 in the same size enclosure. Not even fair to compare the 2 - although I did like the RE.

in a .5 cube enclosure in the back of my gen 1.

Still the best-sounding sub I've ever owned. Output's nice too.

Ordered the SA-69cx and the 6.5cx v2 on Tuesday morning for my door speakers. Not adding an amp yet but will down the road. I can’t wait to get them installed and finally have quality sound.

will post pictures when they’re finally here
