Floor Jack and Jack Stand Recommendations?***NOT A HI-LIFT

Got mine on sale at the store for $100. They gave me a coupon for $20 off my next purchase so I turned around and bought a pair of 6-ton key-locking jack stands which are normally $50 (for the pair).

I'm a huge fan of my low profile 3 ton harbor freight jack. I topped it off with jack oil and bled the system before use (very easy) and it's been amazing. For jack stands, get a pair of 6 tons and a pair of 3 tons. They each have their place in various projects.

 

I spent several years as a professional vehicle relocation specialist (tow truck driver to the layman) and I've put several brands of jacks through their paces, including Snap-On's Blue Point line. Harbor Freight racing jacks outperformed damn near every one of them consistently. For the price, you really can't beat it. get the mailer and use your 20-25% off coupon and you can get the big one for under $100. BUY JACK STANDS TOO! 4 of them. Better safe than sorry, do not get underneath your truck without safely supporting it. No, a cinder block and a stack of 2x4's is not safely supporting it, either, although a few big wooden blocks are essential to any garage and I wouldn't hesitate to use ONE as a spacer if the jack won't go high enough. If you're lifted, get a harbor freight jack and a foot long hunk of railroad tie. If you need a come along or a fire rescue tool, get a hi lift, it's a great tool to get you out of a bad situation on or off the road, but it really has no place in the garage. Even if you have added $4,000 worth of bumpers and sliders needed to lift your $30,000 truck with a nifty hundred dollar jack, you should always use a floor jack and jack stands when possible. If you want an unstable jack to lift your truck, use the one under the back seat.

 

I have this jack ^^^. I bought this one because it is all aluminum so it is much lighter (compared to my old one) for me to carry out of my basement as I don't have a garage. I also liked this one because it is low profile enough for my wife's car (Focus) but also it lifts high enough for my truck, plus has twin pistons for the lifting. It's not a cheap jack though!

Get something that fits your needs but get something good quality so you are safe and also so that you don't need to buy another one again. Also like others said make sure to get some jack stands. Floor jacks are just to lift not to work under! I have a pair of 6 tons and a pair or 3 tons but will probably get another pair of 6 tons sometime soon.

I'm another HFT shopper. I used this floor jack and jack stand combo with my 1st gen and will sue them with my 3rd gen. Admittedly, I have not used them on the 3rd gen yet, as I have not had the need. Here are links to the current version of my 15 year old stuff. FYI, they also had no trouble with an Olds Silouete, Honda Civic, Kia Soul, Toyota Camry, Ford Focus, or a Ford Sport Trac as well as a few other vehicles.

 

Another vote for the Pittsburg Harbor Frieght 3Ton. I used to use it to lift my Silverado, and it still did a great job. Even lifts my Tacoma with a 2.5" lift on it off the ground. I didn't get the low profile, since I'm always working on trucks (wife has 4Runner), I wanted greater reach.

 

The low profile actually lifts 1.5" higher than the standard one.

 

Interesting. I wonder since the "regular" is taller than the total reach is about the same. I need someone to measure the low profile one cause I'm curious now.

 

That's what I was wondering as well. I'm wondering if it lifts something that high off the ground, or if that's how much the jack travels in it's arc, making the standard height one lift a smidge taller. If I remember when I get home around 6 tonight, I'll measure my low profile one.

If you park it on enough wood blocks, any jack will fit. Can't tell you how many low riders with flat tires I've had to pull up on pieces of 2x6 to get the jack under. Same goes for late '90s-early '00s Tauruses when the front coil spring breaks and jams into the side of the tire causing it to lay frame.

Driving a car that's a mere couple inches off the ground onto some pieces of wood is in no way sketchy.

You've never jacked up a late '90s or early '00s Taurus with a broken coil spring jammed into the tire, or anything else laying frame either, apparently. And no, there is nothing sketchy about driving your car onto a small block of wood to get the jack under it (or to get it up high enough to avoid damaging the bumper cover when loading it onto a flatbed or wrecker).
