I just bought my first Tacoma a while back. When I bought it, the previous owner had a 6 inch lift kit on it, and it has 35 inch tires on it. I want to lower that to a more reasonable lift height, and possibly run 33 inch tires on it. As high as it is now, the handling while on the highway is pretty rough. My main use for the truck (other than being a daily driver) is a hunting/ trapping rig, so I want to have it lifted some, but I think what is on it now is too much.

The lift kit that I am looking at getting is right here http://www.roughcountry.com/toyota-suspension-lift-kit-740c.html

I know very little about this, so I want your opinions whether this is what I need, or if I should get something else. Also, is installing this something I can learn to do on my own with fairly simple tools? (I have access to a floor jack, jackstands, wrenches, etc)

I would say this would be a little better option. Although not sure what leafs you have in the rear? You might need a leaf pack instead of an aal. You get what you pay for. Don’t go the spacer route. I put a 3” rough country lift on my xj and it was a huge mistake. For a few hundred more I could have ended up w a much better set up. Also you may have some hacked parts depending on what 6” lift was installed. You won’t be able to do much until you get smaller tires. You’ll need at least a 3” lift to run 33’s. Otherwise you may run into rubbing issues. 1-2” lift I’d run 31” tires.

If it's got a 6 inch lift already you are stuck with it. They cut out your stock cross member.

I am actually starting to doubt what kind of lift is actually on it. The previous owner bought it with the lift on it, and the same set of tires, and he told me it had a 6 inch lift, and 35 inch tires. I got to looking at the tires today, and looked up the numbers on the side of the tire to find out it is actually a 33 inch tire, that being said though, idk what kind of lift is on it/how much. What would be a good way to find out what kind of lift is on it, and how much lift it actually is, because I am starting to think the seller had no idea what he was talking about, and I didn't think to check that myself before buying.

NO NO NO!!! Bad choise, just spacers and crappy shocks. You have now a good platform to update it. Just get rid of the spacers or shorten the fronts and install some better shocks or even decent coilovers to front. Bilstein makes longer 5100´s too. You could maintain a factory like geometry with 3" lift.
This is from FJ´s RC 6" lift, your crossmember is cut, but the dimensions are the same I think: https://s3.amazonaws.com/roughcountry/install/92174700.pdf
