I think...I'm hoping it's only the AC clutch that failed

Last Sunday after a day in the mountains, in some pretty rough terrain, I started the truck, and noticed a strong odor, and the AC wasn't working. Then I saw the light start to blink. After trying to restart the AC two or three times, I started hearing a loud howling sound.

After reading a lot of posts here, I narrowed it down to the AC clutch, which I disassembled later that day. I didn't immediately notice anything definitive, and set up my GoPro to watch the clutch as a I turned it on. Now, in the video, I can see that the clutch has clearly failed.

MY QUESTION: How do I determine if the clutch simply failed on its own, or if the Compressor is failing, and that drag on the clutch, is what caused the clutch to fail? In the meantime, I have a new clutch plate off of eBay, on the way.

If the clutch has gone bad it will usually show signs of the coil potting melting. What you have looks like the compressor is binding. I could be wrong, but a defective clutch is usually obvious.

The above link is an excellent tutorial on how to replace the ac clutch. My failed clutch had what appeared to be melted black material on the outside, like the failed one in the link. I ordered the replacement clutch from the same Ebay seller. I got lucky installing it using a bit of a short cut (did not remove fan blades or shroud). The center bolt is installed with a threadlocker (blue) so you will have to "break" that to loosen the bolt. However, I can't tell from your video if it is indeed the ac clutch or something else.
