So this weekend, I did a test on the mileage of my '17 manual.
My previous 2.7 auto, (the 2011 reg cab 4x4), I got a max (once) of 25 on the highway.

So this time, heading to the beach. I filled up, hit the road using cruise as much as I could, didnt speed, all that. Once I got to the beach off the highway, I filled it back up.
116 miles, took 4.3 gallons to fill up. that comes out to 26.95. I kept thinking I screwed up, so I checked my math again, same. almost 27.
That might be the only time I get that. What I dont know- if the gas I filled up with initially was ethanol free or not. (the 25mpg trip in jersey was ethanol free)

my average is 22.5-23 around town.

Anyone else get a random high mpg trip?

A one-time mileage check could vary due to several factors--different pumps can have inaccuracies in measurement or shut-off points. A more accurate test would be a long trip requiring several fillups. I have had some one time mileage calculations near 29 mpg, but my overall average is more like 25-26 on the road.

Several years ago I found a pump at one station that gave a bit more than the readout, and another at another station that gave out less.

Sounds like your truck does pretty well.

I have a 2wd 5-lugger, auto trans.; I regularly get 26-27 mpgs on flat, interstate highway conditions between 55-60 mph (just under 2000 RPM).

18-23 mpg depending on how I drive. Off roading I get about 18, when I just drive around the city and to work, about 22. I used to calculate it every tank, after doing that for a few months I realized it is consistently above 20mpg, usually about 21.5. I do have pretty tacky tires, so I'm sure I could squeeze an extra mile or two per gallon if i went with road tires, but 20+ is fine for me. My V6 ac mt trd or got about 12-15.. So I'm sold on the four banger getting better gas economy. 25 sounds pretty crazy, I wonder if the 3rd gen is more efficient or if guys are fudging their math.

OP, this is NOT how you calculate mpg in a reliable manner at all.

3rd gen has different ratios in the diffs and trans and is generally lighter. Also has dual vvti so yeah

Would those ratios give it less torqe to improve mpg?

No better for torque so you don't have to rev so much and get better mpg

    Interesting thanks.

Hey OP, this is for the 2nd gen, not sure if it is the same with 3rd gen.. But I checked this many times while filling up and these numbers are 100% accurate for my second gen truck...

    Tacoma fuel tank capacity
    Full to 3/4--------= 5.1* gallons
    3/4 to 1/2------- = 4.0* gallons (9.1 total)
    1/2 to 1/4------- = 4.2* gallons (13.3 total)
    1/4 to E-Light----= 3.5* gallons (16.8 total)
    E-Light to E Line-= 1.7 gallons (18.5 total)
    E Line to Empty--= 2.5 gallons (21.0 total)

Long road trips I get about 28mpg. Average for local trips (city/hwy combined) is around 23. Pretty good for this size truck.

Open loop (warm up period) burns a lot of gas.

Here are 107 fuel ups on fuelly, I see tanks like that whenever I feel the need to drive extra sensibly. I may actually ditch fuelly, because my scangauge has been scary accurate over the few mos that I've had it installed.

I would say the most accurate method of hand calculation is to use the same pump, and top off until you just leak a bit out. I've noticed a big difference in fills from a variety of pumps while pumping to the first click. Sometimes it will take over a gallon to overfill the fuel neck, others it will be just about brimming at first click. The pump I calibrate my scangauge is one that fills to the brim every single time, for whatever reason.

If the fuel pump reading doesn't match my scangauge's "gallons used" field, the noted difference of the pump fill vs scangauge readins always reveals itself on the next tank once I get to the 3/4, 1/2, 1/4 check points.

Also, these are the numbers for our 3rd gen tanks. It's the same actual fuel tank, but for whatever reason it is not the same as posted above anymore.

This is straight from the ECU, as my scangauge reads it ... and "gallons used" has confirmed it. The owner's manual states that there is 3.2G at the light, so that is more evidence of accuracy. I've confirmed these numbers on many fills as well, except what is not provided for the E line, of course.

    Fuel level (remaining), averages:

    18.4G at F line
    14.7G at 3/4 line
    10.8G at 1/2 line
    6.7G at 1/4 line
    3.1G at the light
X.XG at E line no reliable data for this yet

I might pick up a scangauge. Since I drive a bit for work, might come in handy.

I just picked up my Scangauge today from Adv. Auto. They never heard of what I was talking about. They guy was rummaging through the back and I found it at the end of his isle behind the register. They had one and it had dust on it.

I am super excited about it!

I forget the latest version, but you may need to send it in for an update if it's super old. Otherwise, some of the x gauges might not work (if it's a scangauge II).

It is a scangauge II. On the manual it says v6.2. I'll check their site.

    Disregard that v6.2
    I have v4.22

If you filled up in Annapolis, it almost certainly was not ethanol free. It's very hard to find ethanol free gas in MD. I think some marinas have it and a couple random gas stations on the eastern shore.
