Looking for a used camper trailer for 2008 4 cylinder rear wheel drive

What is a comfortable camper trailer weight for a 2008 4 cylinder, rear wheel drive Tacoma?

  1. 2000 pounds is a good cutoff

  2. It can pull more comfortably

  3. May I suggest staying under 1600 pounds dry

    Hi group,
I was wondering if anyone would like to share their experience pulling a trailer behind their Taco. We're looking to buy a camper trailer to pull from Ohio to the southwest for the winter. We don't want to buy something that's hard on the truck, especially in the mountains, so we have been looking for the lightest trailers with a wet bath. For example, a Scamp 16', a Casita 16', a Riverside Retro 150 or 155XL. These all weigh just under 2000 pounds dry. Could we go a little bigger? Something that's 2500 pounds and still pull comfortably? The rating is 3500 pounds, but that seems like a lot to us behind a 4 cylinder. Thanks for any feedback!

What is the tow rating for your 4 cylinder? Have tried to tow a camper with a small engine and will never do it again. Also with those types of campers you have to think of "sail area" which is causing problems due to the wind hitting the front of the trailer.

I think the aerodynamics of a camper will kill you more than the weight. I have no doubt you could pull a 3,000 pound camper across the country, but it will take a lot of patience and determination.

Thanks for the responses. If wind hitting the front of the camper is a bigger concern than the weight, would it make more sense to get a Tab 320 or Tab Max Teardrop or a pop-up or HiLo camper or maybe a Taxa Cricket? How much weight is too much to tow comfortably if I'm pulling one of these? I will be living in the trailer for up to three months this winter, and likely using it for other camping trips in the coming years.
