I went from a Ford Ranger to my DCLB Sport and I don't regret anything. These trucks are worth the price of admission in my mind.

A late production 17 won’t be much different than an early production 18 but I’d wait for the 18s. That being said. Hopefully they will have the low tranny fluid issue coming from the factory resolved by then. That alone would be worth the wait.

MT OR. You'll be happy you Did. I have zero issues with driveability. The only noticeable difference is the .5L which on road is minor and off road is a non factor, and I push my rig as far as most people feel comfortable to with a stocker, and a little more.

OP I second the comment about being happy with whatever truck you like.

Aside from performance, looks, mods, price, issues, the best truck to buy always has to be one you enjoy driving and just think is a cool truck.

If those two things are missing from the get go, 30k is a lot of money to the up just to result in an uneasy feeling purchase.

Well I guess I touched some nerves? Typical male testosterone or lack of. Pull up your big girl panties guys and get over it, you still have your balls in place! Insecurity is not allowed here!

The replies remind me of my VW diesel we owned and lemoned after three months of ownership. No problem here, it was all in my head I was told! The constant breakdowns were all in my mind.... Hum comes to mind here! We all know the outcome there!

There is some discord in the Tacoma’s. Many avid long term Tacoma buyers are dismayed by the lack of power and other woes that the 3rd generation brings. Like the other manufactures the EPA total numbers are coming from the trucks. So what has to happen is either the trucks get better MPG or they get cut to help the over all picture get better. If your are new to the Tacoma lineup you may not pick up on some of the downsizing traits. Never said the Tacoma was a POS!

As far as the friend, I consider his knowledge of the brand is outstanding. He’s worked for Toyota for 32 years. He knows the brand inside and out. When he says something, he’s generally spot on with his answers and does not sugar coat it. Sure many complaints come from unrealistic aspectictions. You’ll find that with any product.

I did bite the bullet and bought a 17 Limited with the tow package, tonneau cover and floor liners/door sill protectors. I had to drive to get it. They will overnight the tags once they procure them from the DMV. The several local stores just wanted to sell me the ones they had on the ground. Inventory is getting thin with the incentives running so my choices were slim pickings. I did decide if this was not the truck I was going to wait for the 18’s. My understanding is the 18’s are going to have some more safety features, but to keep prices down an to be competitive something has to be cheapened up. That too goes for all brands, not just Toyota.

I generally keep my vehicles until the wheels fall off or they outlast their usefulness. For the purpose of the Tacoma buy, it will fill the bill perfectly.
