So my 2014 tacoma just hit 172k and about 4 days ago I was hearing some chattering coming from the drivers side valve cover. Figured I was due for new lifters and kept pressing on. Did my routine oil change and found my oil filter completely dry. Rut roh. Oil pressure light never came on and the chatter was moderate. Just loud enough for me to take notice. My taco is my work truck in the oil patch and I've kept up with maintainence religiously. Never had any major failures out of her. I've been coming to these forums for years to read what y'all post / reply to troubleshoot minor problems and decided this was a major enough problem for me to finally create a log in and ask the Taco guru's.

I'm putting the truck in the shop tomorrow because I'm too novice as a shade tree mechanic to tackle this job. All signs say that it's unlikely the oil pump went out but not out of the realm of possibility. My next question is while I have her in the shop, what else should I have my mechanic replace for knocking on the higher mileage side of things. Should I go ahead and have the timing chain replaced along with the guides? All pulleys? I appreciate any feedback. Hoping I caught it in time to not cause any major damage to the top side of my engine. Banking on everything getting oiled since the low pressure light never came on.

Odds are that the anti-drain back valve in the oil filter failed and all the filter oil drained back into the engine. IF the oil pump had failed you would know about it long before now. The 6 banger is a noisy engine and known to the ticking in the top side of the engine. Oh and there are no lifters in the 1GR-FE Engine, just bucket and shim setup.
