The maintenance schedule specifies plug replacement at 30,000. I've never seen it this
early in any vehicle. Can anyone tell me how Toyota justifies this?

If you change spark plugs yourself, it's under $20 and about 60-90 minutes depending on a person's experience.

Absolutely change them... $20? Don't even think twice, first thing I did after buying my taco. Less than a steak dinner at Longhorn. Come on man!

Satoshi, debadged, rear view mirror bracket, tail gate hose clamps, trimmed mud flaps.
they use copper plugs, so yes 30k. The iridium plugs go 100k.

Some people do yoga, not me, I find peace and calm in changing spark plugs. It's a very simple, straight forward task. Put on some tunes, have a simple table to hold a few tools so nothing falls down in the engine bay, and get to it.

I did mine around 50k something miles; they were worn pretty good; a few plugs were gapping at .060 and majority were around .050 something. With new plugs; I definitely felt the engine run better and smoother. Regain a bit of my fuel mileage too; from 15mpg to now 16.8 averaging.

Just go with the coppers; much cheaper and what is recommended.

Change them, like said it's easy and cheap maintenance. I don't get why some people brag about having ~200k miles on their original plugs meant for 30k intervals....if I were looking to buy a used truck and a seller told me that I'd walk the other way. Who knows what else they neglected.

Currently at 53K. Bought the truck at 30K. I don't know if the dealer changed them or not. Waiting for 60K to change them. MPGs are 21-22.

Toyota and dealers probably thought it was easy money for them to use 30k plugs. If you use dealer, you’re out about $120 with every plug change.

OP, if you decide to change them out yourself, search for the how-to thread on here...it's a very good write up with pics if you need it.

Not saying it's true but I thought I read that failure to change plugs voids emissions warranty

If you set your gap at .040, your plugs will be out of spec by 30K. That is why they say to change them. Mine are usually around .045-046. You could most often re-gap them and put them back in, but....If you go to all the trouble to pull them out, why not just replace them??

Here is another thought. Spark plugs can reveal any number of engine problems. Pulling them every 30k gives you an invaluable check on engine condition. So far all 6 plugs from each pull on my truck look the same. I take one of them, write the date and miles and save them. I have a complete plug history on my truck from 30K to 165K. If anything every changes, I will catch it.
