i see people post stuff like "no more preload with new 700lb springs" since they've switched out their 14" 600lb springs for 700# springs. This would put lca at better angle right. How are they getting the same amout of lift with effectively shorter coilovers (less or no preload). By preloaded coilover you are lengthening the strut correct? My dumb question for the day

The amount of preload to achieve desired lift depends on many factors. Most guys with steel bumper, winch, etc go with heavy springs, gets to desired lift without so much preload, allows you to have max up/down travel compared to a heavy preloaded lighter spring. Short story, can get same lift without preload.

Someone with a lot of weight on 600lb coils is going to have to increase the preload on their shocks to compensate for the sag being created by the weight they've added. When they upgrade to 700lb coils, the coils no longer sag under the weight so they are able to run their shocks with little to no preload because they are no longer having to compensate.

I was thinking by preloading springs you are lengthening coilovers but im probably wrong

You are, but it takes more preload with lighter springs to get to the same hight with stiffer springs and less preload

At least it seems like by putting preload on coil you are putting shock in extended position therefore you are lengthening the total coilover length giving you lift. As well as stored energy in compressed spring. But i just read somewhere that preloading does not lengthen but it sure looks like it does. At least in ny head. So all lift is achieved from compressed coil energy?

Control arms will always be at the same position/angle for the same amount of lift(unless the length of the control arms changes) regardless of preload or spring rate.
