    the Factory NAV sucks
but Hands free and steering wheel controls and factory backup cam are nice.

What Headunits have you used and how was the integration with factory backup and controls.

I'm looking at Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Pioneer 8201 NEX with maestro control box for steering wheel controls. No issues at all. Looking at double din face plates spend the money on a scosche and forget about the metra face plate.

I used a Metra Axxess for steering wheel controls. Works decently well. If you want to do your backup cam as part of the display in the stereo, go double DIN (Pioneer NEX as mentioned seemed like a good option for Nav and Android/iphone integration). Otherwise go with a single DIN and an adapter in the Scorch kit to give you a pocket in the extra space. Those Single DINs are easier to see in the bright sunlight. I can barely see the display on my Clairon when it's sunny. It's very annoying. I doubt the new newer Pioneer NEX units are much better to see when the sun is directly hitting them.

As far as vehicles go, the 2nd gen Tacoma is one of the easier and cheaper 'new' vehicles to install an aftermarket stereo in.

Or you can do this... 20170909_154730_HDR.jpg
Depending on your trucks year it will probably be plug and play.. And it sounds fantastic.. And probably no one will be interested in stealing it.

I had a pioneer 4400 and now have a with CarPlay. Love the Kenwood, it’s a great upgrade and wasn’t tough at all.

Jon, can you explain your post more?

Kinda looks like you cut that in with a chainsaw, but I kinda like it. My last pioneer didn’t last more than a year so I’m boycotting.

New to the forum, but wanted to stick my 2 cents in :)

I second the opinion on Scosche... I installed a single DIN alpine that I already had (bluetooth/xm/etc) using the Scosche adapter. Easiest radio install I have ever done. My truck doesn't have the steering wheel controls (actually didn't want them, just had the base am/fm/cd) so didn't need any adapters for that part.
But the physical radio install went in fast and is very clean install..

Planning next spring to update to a full height with android auto/etc, and will be going with the Scosche adapter for that when I do it!

Yeah my setup is kinda rough. I have a black scosche adapter waiting for me to get a dremel and do it right. The scion radio is slightly wider that normal so I had to improvise. I had a Dual radio and it only lasted about 6 months. That's why I decided on this one, its pioneer and its oem quality so it should be of better quality. Like I said the sound is great and its not a $600 device. I work in IT and because of this I dont want my truck to be smart, Ill eventually get the nav module and nothing should need to connect to the internet. For this setup steering controls worked fine, bluetooth connects fine, the usb feature. Trying to find a microphone, camera and nav module to complete setup.

What year is that scion radio? Are there different types or just the 1 type? And it was completely plug and play, no harness needed?

The radio came from a second gen tc. The model is t10015. For this to work I bought:

PT546-00120-CH this is a 28 pin connector adapter.

    One of these
    https://m.ebay.com/itm/For-Toyota-C...-Cable-Adapter-/172131065934?fits=Make:Toyota

The basic power and speaker connectors plugged in fine. For the power steering and microphone to work you need the pt546-00120-ch adapter. Using that your power steering controls work perfectly.

For the usb functionality you use the adapter on the link I included. So far I'm missing the microphone which is part number pt546-74120-mc.

I have to note I upgraded the door speakers with pioneer 6x9s already. The sound is great.

I replaced my stock with this unit above. Kept my steering wheel controls, did not have to buy any adapters. Gives you the option to set them for different options.

Also spliced into the reverse cam on my rear view and it now displays on the new head unit.

The only con I can find is that bluetooth phone calls sound crappy as Ive been told.

How were you able to get the steering wheel controls to work?

I love my head unit my only regret is not using going to the ILX-309 to get the vehicle info displayed on screen

I have an ILX-259 the new models come with an 11” instead of a 9” screen. Having maps that large on screen is so nice.
