"Sounds like it has had some bad leaks that previous owner didn’t address."

I'm hoping it is just the cylinder heads. I'll replace those as I know there is a leak on the left bank. Of course that just gets me deeper into the engine so that I can clean more stuff.

Every time I handwash I try to remember to pop the hood and clean up.

    That's me with showers.

I use the same scrub brush for detailing my engine bay too.

Oil does protect old engines from rust so old hot rod guys lookin for engines to restore will look for ones covered in oil. That said my OCD won't let that happen to mine. I've done a ton of degreasing in the last six months and hot water is my best friend. I fill up a five gallon bucket with piping hot water and keep refilling a powerful spray bottle with it. It literally melts (well almost literally lol) the oil off of the engine after using some degreaser. I get all my cleaning supplies at the 99 cent store and I have no complaints. Plenty of brushes like bottle brushes help for tight areas too.

It's the valve covers, but yeah on the cylinder heads. Easy fix.

Wiping down engine bay plastics with a WD40 soaked cloth does wonders after cleaning the engine bay.

I gave up cleaning my motor a long time ago, was nice and shiny clean when I swapped the motor in but its too much of a pain to do on a regular basis after wheeling trips. Do skids help keep mud and dirt out of there? I always tell myself Ill just do a really nice job cleaning it the day I get skids.
