I have a 2009 access cab. It has the stock stereo with cd unit. Steering wheel controls also.
Can I install a later gen 2 stereo? The touchscreen type?
Is it plug and play? Will I need a new faceplate?
    Thanks

You'll probably need an interface module for the steering wheel controls. Crutchfield sells them for aftermarket head unit upgrades. They might have something compatible. Their customer service is excellent, so a phone call might answer your question.

You can but you will need some raptors as the connections are different. 12+ I believe are plug in play with 14/15 but previous will need some adaptors. Its possible and have seen some posts on it. Search around for some answers. I sold my 13 unit to a guy who had an earlier gen. You will need a new faceplace for sure but that should just be the piece in the middle. 13 should come with it and the 14 you will need to source it unless they are nice enough to sell with. I scored my 14 on ebay with hd radio etc and scored another base model and used the face plate and sold the radio.

I have a silver set of controls from a 13' and the ac vent surround if you decide to swap that out.

    Thanks guys.
I had the original 2009 stereo that kept cutting out and turning on and off by itself. It was at the dealership under warranty seven times. (Seriously, 7 times)
The last time it conked out I was told that it was no longer under warranty. I wrote to Toyota and long story short, was issued a check for the $229 I spent buying a N.O.S. unit for a 2005 off of Ebay. That one has been working flawlessly since about 2011. It still works great. But looks dated. My Scion has the touch screen HD radio and I like it a lot.
