The shift lever in my Tacoma (AT) is loose. Although it still will move through the gears (P, R, N, D), it will rotate in its axis. This is the first time I noticed it. Is this how it's supposed to be? Or did my friend who drove it this past Monday do some damage?

spin the shift knob clockwise a few times until it tightens up, the knobs just spin on and are not a one piece unit

I'll blame my friend, who drove it, not the Monday build. Might be able to wheedle a beer out of him for worrying me like he did.

Problem solved. Didn't realize that the leather boot popped off so easily. Thanks for your replies.

Before I purchased my Tacoma I mentioned it to the sales person on the test drive. Their answer was
" all the Tacomas do that, it's easier to shift thru the gears. "
I just popped the leather boot off and twisted the shifter 3 times around and now it is solid. Thanks for the advice.

Mine too. I kinda like it a little offset. If that's the worst thing to happen I will be a happy camper. Still dont care enough to tighten it.

Mine turned too. Just had the 5000 mile check up and had the dealer tighten it up. All good now.
