-Thanks for the reply. It does have wider wheels with lower offset so they poke out more (17x9 +1). Tires are 265/70/17 All Terrain compared to OEM 265/65/17 All Season.
-Have not had it aligned, only 5,500 miles on the truck and the Dealer refused to check the alignment under warranty.
-I don't really notice any kind of pull to a certain direction when hitting bumps, although the truck does pull harder to the right while on the highway with the aftermarket wheels compared to stock wheels.
-Tires seem fine, I don't notice any excessive wear but again the truck has 5,500 miles on it (2,500 on stock wheels, 3,000 on aftermarket).

The vibration referred to in this thread is RPM dependent and high frequency (think cell phone vibrating). It is most noticeable around 2100-2300 RPM under load. I had it heavily on my truck, but if I let go of the steering wheel there were no visual cues that it was there. It did not shimmy the steering wheel back and forth.

For your truck you should have wheels/tires triple checked for being round/balanced and double check that all suspension related components are in working order and properly torqued down. Having even one bolt loose could cause a shimmy once the system hits it's natural rhythm at speed. You can have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you inspect for play, but it is still possible to overlook something.

Thanks for clearing that up, my issue does sound different. I plan to get my wheels balanced/checked for the 3rd time to be safe. I checked the rear leaf u-bolts myself and all 8 nuts were loose, but that's all that I've personally checked.

I edited my post above, but you should check all bolts/bushings relating to suspension. Unload the suspension if possible by jacking from the frame and grab, pull, shake near every bushing to see if there is any sort of play. If it checks out, then once on the ground torque to spec. You may need to keep one tire off on the front and support from the axle to load the suspension to torque items in the front if you can't get access.

One bolt is all it takes to start a shimmy.

Could the rear diff recall be the cause of vibrations at 2200 rpms?

You should at least have it checked.
In the least, I suspect toe will be off.
You'll want some toe-in with that wheel/tire combo. The added scrub radius causes the tire to toe-out further while in motion. If you set it at 0, it will toe-out while in motion.

I appreciate the info, I also suspected the alignment could be off but the dealer wouldn't check it. Will either pay them or take it somewhere else to have it checked. Thanks again!

    That sucks.
My dealer has a special lane just for doing the quick alignment check. Takes less than 5 minutes.
From my experience and what others have related, you should have 2 alignments; it's not really written down anywhere.

So I just spent 4 hours going through this thread. I'm going test drive two diff Tacomas tomorrow. One is 16 DCsb sport 4x4 w 34k miles. The other is a 16 DCSb Off road w 29k

My senses will be on high alert.
Thanks to all the contributors. I'll be looking and listening extra close tomorrow.

Well I drove one of the trucks I intended to consider buying. Came within 1200 of making the deal. Left. Merged on interstate and the truck hydroplanes out of control. Hit the dirt, guard rail and I killed my freshly cleaned trade in. I'm fine. Wife is fine. Got a ticket. Dealership calls me tells me the truck sold.

Well I guess I'll start drinking.

Can anyone save me the time of the reading all of these and tell me if there's a fix for this problem, or a more consolidated thread? Thanks.

That sucks. It's pretty uncomfortable on interstate longer drives. Guess I'll file the complaint like everyone else then...

Since this has been going on for years Toyota can't fix the fucking issue sounds like bullshit too me. After talking to the tech last week he told me that he thinks Toyota might be having issues with a certain batch of converters produced early on in 16/17.....

Was he able to fix the vibrations at 1800-2100 RPM by swapping out the converter?

He didn’t go into details about the issue but did say that Toyota has been looking very hard into this issue at a R&D center. But he also said they are looking at remapping of the shift patterns with new converters.

I don’t really know what to believe anymore as I feel I have been given more shit than a constipated elephant......

Toyota’s explinations of it being normal is not flying anymore......

Since the manual trans also have the buzz, it does not seem likely to be the converter---unclear to me if the MT has a converter and if it does it's likely different than the AT [e.g., a clutch on the MT vs a converter on the AT]
