Also another thing to consider is where you buy the bike from. Private sellers wont help you with bike maintenance, where as your local bike shop, will help you keep your investment in tip top shape. A big chunk of enjoying a mtb experience is simply just keeping a bike in good, clean working order. Bikes need constant love to keep them silent on the trails. Just like our trucks :)

go back a couple pages to see :) I just recently got on a new Santa Cruz Hightower LT, XX1 build with reserve wheels.... that being said I would never recommend that someone who's just trying to get a feel for the sport seriously look at a bike like mine, even if $10K's just pocket change.

My old K2 I've had since I was 16.... survived 14 years of downhill trails in northeast PA, the Italian alps and three rebuilds. Currently hanging in my garage because I live in flat, disappointing Florida

If you're asking me, I made it. Found a blueprint on Google. $50 worth of pvc, glue, pvc insulation, camo duct tape. U bolts through the bottom of the bed and bungees from the rack to the side tie downs. Solid rack that never gave me any issues.

Question: I'm debating between a fork mount and a wheel hitch. Any pros/cons with either? I'm leaning towards the wheel hitch because i can leave the tire on and don't need to find a space for it when bed is fully loaded. i'm going to hook either of these up to KB Vodoo's bed cross bars.

The wheel hitch looks like it is just for the wheel once you take it off, unless you can attach it while still on the bike.

Hey folks. Totally new to mountain bikes coming from the world of beach cruisers. I am currently recovering from kidney transplant surgery and wanted to get active to help with recovery and keep the weight off. A buddy gifted me his old training bike as I thought out loud on Facebook that I wanted something lighter than my big ass cruiser. Never realized how lightweight these bikes can be. I can lift this one with one arm and can load it into the bed of my truck over my spare tires. He wouldn't tell me how much he paid for this thing but I suspect it wasn't off the rack at Walmart. hahahaha

The doctors haven't cleared me to ride yet, but I did take it for a couple spins this week to adjust the seat height. So much easier to ride than the cruiser.

Pic of my cruiser and the new to me mountain bike.

If you are getting back into things after years off (like I just did) used is the way to go. Find a good friend or co-worker who can guide you through the used market. Then start hunting. My budget was $800-1200 (CDN) originally. After a few searches I upped my price to $1300 and then bought at $1600. My reasoning was this. If in 12-24 months I realize I am not using it like I anticipated or just just don’t love it as much as I expected I can still get out of it without a major loss. That same $8-1200 bike will lose $400 the moment I pay for it (plus any sales taxes) and might have a tough time selling it. By comparison I bought a full carbon framed Kona King Kahuna with a ton of upgraded parts. This was a $4600 (CDN) bike new in 2014. I can sell it any day for minimal loss if any to cover my $1600 purchase price. I will fully admit I fought tooth and nail everytime my co-worker sent me a new listing that was above my price range. In the end like Gunshot says you can get a LOT more bike for your money. I ended up with a bike that is light years ahead of my abilities and with components I should never need upgrading (except for wear or damage replacement). It was the RIGHT decision and I already have offers at higher than I paid if I ever consider selling.

That's the first YT I've seen on here. I love what they're doing with the direct to consumer business model. Hate to short change a local bike shop but when you can save 3k off a top level build right away that's hard to argue. My second bike might be the next generation Capra if they actually update it with a boost rear axle, metric shock, etc. they make value thier bitch! lol

Agreed. I have a capra as well and that bike rips. Just hard to turn your nose on a top of the line build for a fraction of the cost
