Hello, I am new to the site and had a question if anyone can help. I have a 2017 TRD Sport, I am trying to activate my parking lights to use while driving like my 2013 had. I have seen other 3rd Gens do it although I cant seem to figure it out. I have read on other sites people have had the same problem not being able to get them on. I thought the emblem on the steering wheel column above the DRL was parking lights although nothing happens when I turn to it other than the instrument cluster and interior buttons lighting up for night time use. Another site suggested putting e-brake on and putting truck into drive while going to option above DRL although nothing happened still.

The "eyes" above the DRL activates your parking lights. The DRL in addition to the amber running lights and tail lights will illuminate.

That's what I thought although the parking lights don't illuminate when switched to the "eyes" above DRL. Just wanted to make sure no one else has the same problem.

Unlike the 2013, the amber lights on the front of the truck (the turn signal ) will not illuminate (on the models equipped with the DRL). The only amber bulb that will illuminate are the side markers near the corners of the headlight housing. Hope this makes sense.

Ok, makes perfect sense, Thank you. I saw a 3rd Gen Tacoma yesterday with DRL and amber "turn signal" running lights on like the 2nd Gen so it had me thinking there was an issue with mine.

Yeah the front turn signal amber bulbs will turn on only if the truck isn’t equipped with the DTRL strip.

So I just bought a 2017 Tacoma sport this wknd and have been chasing my tail with the damn front parking lights. I'm already annoyed to find this thread saying they wont work if truck is equipped with the DRL strips. Opportunistic me says what about running a jumper wire from the side marker hot wire to the parking light hot wire. since both I believe are not led, there should not be an issue right? Anyone actually done this mod, or 'workaround' as we call it.

@Puppypunter , looks like this guy wants to go from TRD to SR5 headlights. He seems like the first one.

If the SR 3 pin turn bulb fits into the spot, a T off the sidemarker is easy.

Anyone got the part number for SR5 turn bulb?

Are you looking to physically change the headlights out for the SR ones? Are you looking to have the amber turn signals lit constant like a DRL or parking light?
The turn bulb itself is 7442 (though 7443 is more likely what you will find, and it is a replacement). The TRD's use a 7440. The sockets are different though (beyond the 1 vs 2 filament issue). So it won't be as easy as swapping the socket and/or bulb. Also, if you put a 7443 and just jumper it, it will stay lit when the turn signal is on. So your best case scenario that way will be a bulb that flashes from dim to bright when the turn signal is on. If you want to have a dimmed parking light that then flashes bright/off/bright/off, you're going to need some additional parts. I am fairly certain Diode Dynamics makes something for this. Or you could try to get a set of the VLED Triton 3 Amber/Amber switchbacks.

Probably the cheapest option would be to downgrade to SR5 headlights and lose the LED DRL.

Coolest option is OEM LED w mod for amber DRL instead of white like MESO.

Good thinking on the parking light filament staying on while turn is flashing.

You would still have to change the behavior of the turn/DRL bulb. No real "easy" way to do it. It can be done, all p-n-p, but to get it "right" will need the additional logic. The SR's have the logic built into the ECU.

Ah, so sidemarker T, 3 wires in, 2 wires out? And the black box does the rest.

It could be kind of fun to try. No need to change any bulbs.

I might consider trying it if I can ever get my bench setup completed.

It might look strange with LED DRL and constant turn signals on both sides. That could confuse people a little.

I agree. I would either do an amber DRL or unplug it and emulate the SR headlights.
You could tee off the sidemarker, or just steal the signal from the DRL plug if you unplug it anyway.
Let me know if you ever want to replicate the SR headlight function on the bench. I am building mine now, and like most things I do, it's stupidly more complex than you would think.

oops just seeing this. all good info folks. keep me posted if someone is able to make the stock drl led work with the ambers as well. I do not want to swap lenses to Sr or buy new aftermarkets.

Im surprised this option isnt wanted more. I loved the brightness of the parking ambers in my 2016 sr5 during the daytime and really like the look of the ambers with the fog lights on as well during the day. Being the LEd DRL on the 2017 only lights 1/2 the lense I am underwhelmed with that I guess. You guys have some serious knowledge and thank you for the options.

Its doable, but it takes some extra parts. You want it to act like the SR/SR5 right? Where the Light is solid bright amber with the DRL, flashing bright amber with the turn, and dimmed amber with headlights on? You will also need to find a way to fit a 7443 in a TRD 7440 hole (they are different holes, so you cant just pop one out of an SR and pop it in a TRD).

If you're serious about doing it, I can do the whole thing for $175 :) Including bulbs AMBER V6 BULB (vleds.com)

FWIW, check out @MESO ’s build thread. He did amber DRL’s on OEM LED headlights and it looks great. Would be slick if we had that as an easy option vs white.
