So, I've owned my 2nd gen Tacoma since 2011. It's a 2008 quad cab long bed TRD sport.
I bought it certified used with 54k miles on it. It's not got 136k miles on it. And it has been flawless. I kept it stock, except for adding CBI Offroad Sliders, right when I bought it.

I am starting to make some modifications to it, and putting some $$$ into it.
I put a Leer Shell on it on Saturday.
And I am putting some BudBuilt skids on it.
While Installing the skids, I saw something that made my hair stand on end.
Specifically, the welds on the frame. On the drivers side, there is rust through. Pinching the rust, I can feel that it goes all the way through.

I am aware of the Frame recall and I had the frame inspected about a year ago, and they said the frame was OK.

Well, this does **NOT** look OK.

Should I have this inspected by a dealership again?
Can they deny my frame warranty because of the CBI sliders? (nothing is obviously rusted through where the sliders attach, and I can get a certified Engineer to sign off on that fact, if need be).
I am mostly looking for how I can protect myself when I take this to a dealership in case they try to deny the recall based on my rock sliders.

Just keep taking it back until someone there realizes that it needs to be replaced. They’re probably overwhelmed with the number of Tacoma’s coming in for inspections :)

If you don't have a 10mm hole you pass inspections and under the new campaign you get a crc coating. I have read that it only makes it rust quicker. So check if you have a 10mm hole or check if your frame is splitting the layers of metal. The sliders should not be a problem i was told by the dealer that unless you have a crazy lifted suspension set up with a cut frame then you don't get cover by the warranty campaign.

    yep..
Try taking a putty knife and scraping sway the rust there. I have the same on my frame where the spot welds are, it was just bubbling under the frame coating. I scraped off the loose stuff and hit everything with fluid film. Not a hint of progression since I've done that. Hopefully you luck out

Check the stickies on this section, there is a frame restoration guide. (that is of course unless you have actual rot through and holes in the frame) :)

I would go to the dealer and show them asap. Also I had weld on sliders and i was still covered by warranty when my frame was replaced. Good luck.

The pics really don't look bad at all. As mentioned before, unless you actually have it rusted through, just check out some of the stickies and spend a minute or two under the truck.

I would just wash it off and spray a random rustoleum product on it.

My 2006 just went in for a frame replacement. Mine was covered not under a recall, but a warranty enhancement (If it occurred within 12 years of first use). In order for it to fail the frame inspection, it must be perforated by a minimum 10 millimeter hole. On my vehicle; the reinforcement plates on the inside of the frame were rotted out (not criteria for replacement), but it also had two holes in the frame where is was completely rusted through. They opted to cover mine in spite of the fact the the previous owner welded sliders to the frame and chopped the front cab brackets.

If yours is not perforated, I would recommend removing or treating the rust with some type of rust converted before just painting it.
