Can someone tell me what this (silver, cylindrical thing) is and what purpose it serves?

It’s on a 3.4L, on the left side near the oil filter, towards the back of the engine.

I noticed it looks like it’s leaking. Is it something simple I can change myself or will I have to mess with the internals of the engine?

    Which cools the oil lol

Where was it leaking from? Where it threads into the engine block? From the coolant hose?

You can flush it out with brake clean and put it back on and see if it leaks any more.

Yes, it looks like it’s leaking from where the threads are. Thanx, I’ll clean and reinstall to see if it’s still leaking.

Looks like there is an o-ring that might need replacing @gunny1005 can get one for you really cheap if you can wait for shipping:

Oh and you should change the thread title (under Thread Tools at the top) to Oil Cooler Leaking at Block or something like that so other people with the problem can find it too!

I’m going to do as Dalandser recommended and clean it up first then change and see if it’s still leaking first.

Could be oil from the call cover gaskets pooling around the oil cooler. Clean the area up and see where it's coming from if it's not 100% certain where the leak is coming from. More pics or a video posted to YouTube and linked here could help too!

Cleaned off the area prior to going out of town. Been back for a few days and used the truck a few times to run errands. The area has remained bone dry.

Gunny1005, I don’t think I’ll need those oil cooler gaskets just yet.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions and the help.

Yeah I've noticed that oil from the valve covers may look worse on the block than on the heads maybe because the cast iron seems to soak it in and make it look especially greasy compared to the relatively slicker cast aluminum heads.

You'll have to unbolt it, replace the o-ring behind it, bolt everything back up. torque to spec.

Do you have to drain the oil and coolant to replace the cooler seals or can you just undo the bolt and pull the cooler off the block to gain access to the seals to replace them?

Yeah you have to drain it all unless the hoses have enough reach to leave the cooler hooked up.

I just read another post on a different site where someone has done several of these without draining any coolant or oil,and had the whole job done in under 30 minutes.
I think i,m going to try that way.
