It won’t surge as bad once you get more miles on it, at 25k the power is much different in delivery compared to low miles. I’m talking about the 2500rpm-4000rpm range.

I also had a 2001 DC TRD. Loved it but sold it now going on 8 years ago. Bought a '17 and there is nothing that I miss about the 01. The new one's more comfortable, better dash layout, better ride, more capable (ATRAC is nice), and MUCH SAFER (look up the small overlap test for the 2017).

As far as those complaining about new electronic doo-dads (i.e. transfer case dial/lever), I wonder if you've had one fail on you? Way back in the day, I did have a push-button 4WD on the 4Runner which acted up once in a while. Solenoid fix. Two friends and two family members with dials on their 8-10 year old Tundra/Tacoma's and none have had any issues. Both family members are general contractors regularly working in negative degree temps during the winter. And they're not easy on trucks.

Any time there is a new product revision, there are always retro-grouches that rear their heads and fondly remember only the good things of the good ol'days while conveniently forgetting all of the other garbage they had to deal with.

My advice to the OP is to just drive it. You'll end up loving it as much as your 01, if not more.

I have a 2001 2.7L 4 door Prerunner. - 210K trouble free miles. Love the truck. Never selling it. I am shooting for 500K miles. It is a keeper. Good enough for the Taliban, good enough for me.

    Bought a 2016 TRD OR 6MT - put 3,800 miles. Traded it on a 17 PRO.

    17 PRO 6MT 49K miles - perfect.

If I had to choose one, I would take the 01. But I am glad I don't have to make the choice. Love both of them..
