in a few weeks the wife and I am thinking about going on a three day adventure.

So far the plan is to leave Maine and enter New Hampshire in Conway, take 16 up through the white mountains. Head over to Vermont up to Burlington. Don't have a route yet, but want to avoid highways. Rake route 2 around/through Lake Champlain. And then come back down through the Adirondacks.

We plan to leave Friday morning once the kids are off to school, end up in Albany Sunday night so we can return early afternoon Monday before kids done with school.

Looking for ideas of place worth checking out, roads worth driving. Before getting narried, we would drive all over NH, Western Maine, and Vermont. So for our 20 year anniversary I have convinced her to go for an adventure. It's also my way out of trouble, as I was supposed to rent a cabin up at Moosehead, which would be awesome, but I didn't make it happen and would rather adventure anyways.

Will you be camping or looking for hotels?

Once you cross into NY (assuming you'll take the ferry), you can take rts 9 and 22 heading south. They cross several times so you can look and see which one you want to stay on depending on which town you want to hit. As you get further south, you can decide if you want to hit Lake George and Saratoga or keep east and avoid them. Those routes, at least north of Saratoga, are a 2 lane backroad and meander through lots of little towns. They hug Lake Champlain for a while heading south.

If you'd rather go further into the Adirondack Park, you can take rt 3 out of Plattsburgh heading SW towards Saranac, then hit rt 30 or 28 and see Tupper Lake, Long Lake and Indian Lake and loop back toward Lake George. Then, you can cross back into VT and make your way back towards Maine. If you cross back into VT around Lake George or Ticonderoga, you'll still be at about central VT and still be able to cut back roads across VT and NH, avoiding highways. if you go this path, you might want to call ahead to make sure you have lodging set up. A lot of these little lake towns are really nice, but close up shop in the off season.

Don't think we will camp, but may pack just in case. Currently, plan is to stay around Burlington maybe, depending on time was. Thinking of taking route 2 up through the lake. Then not sure. Stay Saturday night in the mountains, get back closer to home Sunday night for an easier drive Monday.

I'll look at your suggestions on routes on a map. Thanks

As Pugga said, once you're in NY, either sticking along Lake Champlain, or looping through the mountains are both good options. Lake Placid is the "hot spot" in the Adirondacks, with lots of shops, restaurants, etc. Lake Placid also has some great views of the mountains from the village, if you walk around Mirror Lake. A bunch of stuff is closing after today, so there is a little less to do now, but it also means that the crowds should be gone. If you decide on a general route, I can offer restaurant suggestions, and maybe some route tweaks. Saratoga is also a tourist town, but I would guess it's also winding down after this weekend.

Thanks, I'll post up once I have an idea. Figured things would be settling down, and coming from a tourist area, I enjoy it when folks are gone.

13 mile woods along the andro was nice this weekend . I'm sure the Killington area is nice now. After that cut up to rutland, and then rt 4 over to lake George, ny. If you go by Rutland, detour to Proctor and check out the town that's made of marble. Literally marble sidewalks. Pretty neat.

Can you tell me more about the dirt, where to get on and where to expect to come out. Would love to find a bunch of these to check out if we have time.

That works better actually. I'm off to work, 3rd shift lift. I can draw up a map route on my lunch. Ever do the Kancamangus?

Yep, many many times. When the wife and I were dating 20 years ago, we drove that a few times. My current plan is to go up 16 through the whites, but am open to ideas.

Here's a start . From there you could travel down to rutland, West to Queensbury NY, and anywhere past there

Thanks, don't think we will camp this time, or in NH. However this info will be useful next year for sure.
