    Thanks for the trail report.

My plan is to leave out from our Tate City campsite on Tallulah River Rd, take Cat Gap Rd. over to FSR163. Run FS163 up the mountain to 76, then hwy 197 towards Helen and hit Tray Mtn Trail from the Chimey Mountain side and run the whole trail.

I’m a little nervous about that now. Sounds like the Chimney Mt. approach is going to be pretty challenging. I’m lifted on 265/75’s but not having armor might be a game changer. Is the Tray trail significantly more difficult when approached from Chimney?

I suppose it's all about the lines you take. A good spotter would help. There seemed to be plenty of spots to turn around before the worst parts if you feel the need to bail out. You're in an Offroad so you're got the E-Locker going for. I'd say go for it. :burnrubber:

My Sport only has the e-limited slip with the yellow wire mod, which actually performed pretty well. I'm running BFG K02s, 265/70-17s.

I did it in a stock OffRoad with the stock 265/70 tires. I have sliders but I didn't use them on that trail. No issues that the rear locker wouldn't handle. Don't even recall using that either.

We did Dicks Crk, Charlies Crk, and Barefoot Rd (all paved, rural/residential ). Really enjoyed Dicks Crk and Charlies Crk. The last 100 yds or so of Dicks Crkb, going south to north, we're interesting. I'd been down Charlies Crk a month ago but didn't actually cross the creek. There was a lot of obvious storm damage From Irma, but again, someone went to a lot of effort to keep the trail open. All in all a fun couple of days.

You can thank the Forest Service for a lot of that! We've been busting ass with the saws trying to open roads... Sawing isn't too bad, but the swamping sucks!!!

Love them, man. Huge upgrade over the stock TRDOR suspension. I have mine set at #3 for about ~1.5-2" of lift and haven't had any issues. Still running stock suspension in the rear, but sitting level.

Sweet! Tray Mtn. still on the docket. I'll be running it on Oct 15th if the schedule holds.

Thanks for all of your hard work!

Absolutely appreciated. Like so many people who've stepped up; first responders, power line workers - no amount of gratitude could ever repay for your service and sacrifices.

Hey guys, just checking to see if anyone would be interested in a large-format print out of this map? The print measures 4' x 3' and is on standard white paper. I can do other zones as well, and other states if they're online.

    Link to the map:

    https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd523979.pdf

I have access to a large-format printer. I'd have to run it by my boss to see what it would cost per print and I'd have to find out the best way to ship it.

If people would be interested I'll look into seeing what the cost would be to get some shipped.

All of those MVUM (motor vehicle use maps) posted on the Chatt-Oconee NF website are also geo-referenced pdfs. You can upload them into the free Avenza PDF Maps app, use them on your phone or tablet (even without cell service), and it will show your location on the map... Pretty damn slick.

I have found Avenza to be fairly accurate as well... At least within a hundred ft or so, even without cell signal in the middle of the woods.

Only problem is that Avenza recently changed their map allowance to 3 user created maps, unless you pay for their Pro license.

    IMG_9387.jpg

You can see my location as the blue dot at the bottom of the map... Well I'm actually under the trail inset map they have floating over Hall Co., but you get the picture.

Nice, I didn't know that! I'll add Avenza to the iPad I use while wheeling and try that out. Thanks for the heads up.

So due to some unforeseen circumstances (a lost cellphone and 150 miles worth of looking for it), I wasn't able to do Tray Mt. this past week.

I did find another really good trail I'd definitely recommend. FSR 32C which is reached via either Coleman River Rd. or Patterson Gap Rd. It's a narrow, sometimes steep trail that winds through the Persimmon Creek / Coleman River area just east of the Charlie's Creek Trail area. There's 2 water crossings, both narrow, but the Coleman River crossing was pretty deep at around 2' or more. The trail isn't technical or rutted because they have heavy gravel down it, but there's some good steep climbs that were fun. Also the west end of the trail has an awesome view of an old wooden barn at the edge of a field. Overall trip is about 6 miles off road, but the FSR32C portion is around 3-4 miles.

This link should show my entire route.

Man I wish I could ride with you guys. That 4+ hr drive from Columbus to Clayton is a killer, though.

I could probably make that work.

I have an itinerary planned for my next trip with the planned route being Helen > Tray Mountain Trail > Hwy 76 towards Hiawassee > FSR 163 to Cat Gap/Persimmon Rd > Tallulah River road up to Charlie's Creek then double back > Coleman River Rd. to FSR32C > then tie in to FSR32/Patterson Gap Rd. into Dillard and onto anywhere from there. The route should be stock 4wd friendly except for Tray which is the only trail I don't have experience on.

I'll have my sliders by then and will be a little more trail ready.

That sounds like a good trip, I haven't hit FSR 163 or RSR32 so I'd be down for that. With Tray sliders are good and a decent spotter should get you up the fun side

Sounds good. I want to hike the Beech Creek Loop up there sometime within the next few months so I'll probably try to tackle that during the same trip.
