I must admit my 2017 Taco is my first Toyota, always drove GM before. Summer my old habits were to split AC between floor and dash vents. Winter I would run Defrost until I had heat, then switch to a split between floor and defrost.

It is hitting 45F here now in the evenings and the floor/defrost split seems different than what I got in my Silverado. Does letting the truck decide of AC is on work out OK generally in cold weather ??

Bottom line how do you set things up in your truck for cold weather driving, and why.

I keep it in Auto and set the temp

And I'm pretty sure every vehicle uses the AC when defrost is on, most just don't show that the system is running.

This morning was a little cold (50s), but the heat in this truck is really good once it starts going. I had to crack my windows to vend some hot air, but that seemed to work really good for me.

Do you have the tech package? If not, this might help:

I believe one notch above F/D does not kick on A/C, which I like. Although, I would prefer to have full manual control over A/C.

In general, I'm using it one notch after B/L to one notch before F/D.

Haha! It took me a week or so to figure out that there were notches between the five main settings. I thought is was some parallax or something.

I don't know if this is the thread for it, but the windshield fogging up is hands down my biggest complaint about my Tacoma. Nothing is comfortable until you've spent like 15 minutes playing with the knobs. Start it up, turn the air on, everything gets foggy, turn on the heat to defrost do you can see, turn this back to warm then turn the fan down, you're sweating balls but you can see, turn to cold, you're an ice cube but the windshield is clear, it's like there's no happy medium. I do not have a tech package, just knobs.

No Tech package......with it set dead on F/D it felt like 0 on F, cool air drifting out dash vents, something going on with D maybe, AC on.

Yes. Once set directly on F/D and further right, it will automatically turn on A/C with nothing that you can do about it. I think there is a harness mod posted on here somewhere to fix that. I will look into it once I get some more miles on the truck.

IMHO running the AC on defrost is pretty typical, and may be a good thing, drying cabin air helps defrost windows probably. Will play more once weather settles into "cold" :).

I agree and disagree. A couple of our old cars allowed us to have full control over the A/C. Personally, I hate A/C whether it is a car, home, or office. It is just a thing with me.

What I like to do is turn A/C on briefly to clear any fogging, then be able to switch it off and just let the air moving out of the defrost vent take care of it. That worked 99% of the time that I had windshield fogging.

For now, I'm managing that with the selector one notch left of F/D.

I searched the internet and couldn't find much info about the PTC Heater. Post something if you find it.
