Just did mine. I recommend removing the caps, there is a video on YouTube that was helpful. (search Tacoma bumper cap removal)

The Rust-Oleum flat black is pretty much spot on color wise

    here is a quick video:
    https://youtu.be/4ymEfZol0cI
For mine, 1 can was just enough for both caps.
After removing the caps, I first washed them down with Dawn dishwashing detergent, inside and out. Once dry, I wiped the outside surface with alcohol.

I did not scuff or prime since the beauty if derp is you can peel it off if you change your mind.

The first coat the bumper cap was upside down, I just sprayed the inside edges, once dry (5-10 mins) I flipped it over and sprayed the outside. I repeated this 4 times with very light coats.
The last coat can be heavier, and the spatter surface levels out and the final surface is relatively flat.
I let the whole thing dry about 18 hours before re-installation.
Putting them back on is way easier than taking them off, lol.

I derped my grill chrome bezel and logo in January using the same procedure, and after 7 months, it still looks pristine fwiw

I attempted it last night with my chrome bezel around the grill and it turned out really good which made me consider the rear bumper. Fingers crossed.

From the videos I've seen there's a clip in the middle that's tough to come off. Is it better to remove the whole bumper to get at it that way or can I just pull the caps off without removing the entire bumper?

Curious, is there anyone out there that's done this on a white 3rd Gen? Haven't been able to find any pics of the stock bumper in all black on a white 3rd Gen. Anyone out there that's done it?

How well does it hold up to automated car washes?

I dnt have any pics ready, but def worth doing. I took my caps off, you will have to be missing a clip that breaks when you do it but they will stay on just fine. Its legit to if they get dirty or anything you can just touch them back up.

Have the chrome rear bumper as well. Hate the chrome love the black! Have you ever run your Taco through a high pressure laser car was. Curious if derp would hold up. Was my truck often, a little skeptical about its durability.

Did mine with some friends and cold beer. Still holding strong after about 7 months. I used about a can and a half. The glossy look in the picture went away once it was fully dry. Think it ties everything together being black!

Cool, did you leave the clips on or remove them?
