it has a 6400lb tow rating which is on par for the double cab short beds. It may squat a bit more though

With that analogy a 1/2t cant tow shit either. I'm coming from heavy trucks where a 1/2t couldn't tow what I needed which would make the 1/2t shit, according to your analogy. The Tacoma can tow just fine for what it is designed to tow just like a 1/2t is. Only thing I agree with you is to buy the horse that's going to pull the cart you want.

How much can the Tacoma tow? Complicated question. You need to learn what all the abbreviations of weights mean and how they relate to each other. But a general rule of thumb is tow no more than 80% of the rated tow capacity of the truck. Of any truck, not just the Tacoma. Unless you are 2wd, its #6400#. But its really much more than that. I suggest finding these numbers of your truck in the owners manual then put as much stuff into this calculator that you can. More info into it the more accurate it will be. Fwiw, I feel comfortable towing a total load and this load is counting passengers, full tank of gas, anything in the bed and the trailer combined no more than around 5300#. Im also considering how even the weight is across all axles, tongue weight, using a weight distribution hitch, and a brake controller. Then there is long hauls catching the wind. So there is a start...

new half tons (1500s) have a towing cap of around 12000 pounds. 3/4 tons jump up to around 14-16 and then the big boys (1ton) are rated to about 30000. a half ton is a good truck for your towing needs

Just curious... what makes a truck a "1/2 Ton"? I'm pretty sure the Tacoma payload is 1200 lbs~ish. My '91 Pickup had the same payload as well. Isn't a ton 2000 lbs and a 1/2 ton 1000 lbs?

it used to refer to the cargo load capacity. But since everyone has to outdo the competition the numbers have since grown to well above their class name.

Not totally false. If you calculate what J2807 says about GCWR and what the old says about 80% of max tow capacity those numbers are still pretty close. The GCWR of a 4wd Tacoma is somewhere around 11330# (off the top of my head.) Run the numbers, Its pretty close.

That's just a small fishing boat man I'm surprised you're having problems. I mean it's not going to drive like if it weren't towing anything

I saw a tundra over the weekend pulling a massive camper, maybe 30+ feet. Light turned green and he took off like a boss to 60mph. Now that's not exactly scientific but I think you'd do well.

Truthfully probably better stay closer to 80-85% of GCWR.

My Tacoma towed a Sea Hunt 234 Ultra just fine. I down sized to a Tidewater 1910 baymax. My truck pulled the 234 Ultra better than the 1910 baymax. 234 Ultra has a better trailer... tandem axle trailer....it’s all about weight distribution. Surge breaks where nice too.

So I had to pick up some PT at Lowes today for a deck I'm building. I remembered this pissing contest so I videoed the "burnout" with my phone. The load was likely about 4000 lbs based on how it felt towing. You can see by the picture, there is plenty of tongue load. The trailer empty has a 150 lb tongue load. Video to follow... going to be a while uploading at .5mbps.
