Spent some time on the lathe today. New handles for a set of antique pairing chisels. The chisel handles are an unknown exotic from the bin at woodcraft. Also made some ironwood handles for a set of rasps from the Unplugged Woodshop (https://theunpluggedwoodshop.myshop.../products/two-handed-rasp?variant=39038432589). I sanded some 1/2" copper pipe fittings for the ferrules.

 

just bought a 4jaw chuck for my lathe...cheapest place I found brand new was Optics planet!. I cant wait to try making a pepper mill. I have the kit, hopefully it turns out ok. I'll post pics when Im finished.

 

Can't wait to see the pepper mill. I've been wanting to do one. Need a lathe first

Check out Samurai Carpenter on YouTube. Mostly Japanese carpentry. Awesome joinery, lots of hand tool stuff. You could get going with a few hundred bucks invested in a few good chisels, a couple pull saws, mallet for chiseling, and a decent hand plane. Hand tools are where it’s at imo, esp when getting started. Very meditative and satisfying.

Open for suggestions for a gouge chisel. 50:50 paring:mallet about 1" nominal width, sweep somewhere in #12 to #20 land. I have a local two cherries dealer, then off to Amazon...

is that a shop fox? I bought one off of craigslist for about half the price of a new one, it was only used once. I used it more in the first time trying it out than what the guy did that bought it brand new.

 

Carving out the hollow forefoot on a 16' skiff. I ran cedar strips down to where even the ones with prefect grain were splitting, then epoxied in a block of hickory, so now i need to carve the hickory with a compound concave curve in it, a mirror image pair of them actually, to finish the hull.

I am actually building a 32" toolbox shaped roughly like the 16' skiff i want to launch summer 2018. Planning to start the full size build in mar or apr 18, making the first set of mistakes on the toolbox.

 

Nope. Its a Rikon midi. I picked it up from a friend who posted it on CL. He couldn't justify owning 3 lathes...lol

 

Wow, it turned into a jungle. I had never bought a gouge before, that is a chisel just with a curve in the blade at the front.

It seems like all the makers agree that a #1 gouge is the same as a regular straight chisel. There used to be an English table of curves and a Continental table of curves, like a century or two ago. Since then shopping now every maker seems to have their own table of curves, so one makers #8 might be real real close to another makers #14.

I read a bunch of reviews and ended up choosing to go with Pfeil because of consistently good reviews, and then looked at their curve tables, chose a Pfeil 8L/25 as my tool - and found one in stock in Canada so it should be here in a few days.

If my local dealer had had something close to that in the Two Cherries line I probably would have bought it just to save the bandwidth...

No new pics of the boat shaped box yet. I play with it on Sundays after working six nights a week on the house.

My first paying gig. Mantle shelf in white oak. Hand cut mitered corners joined with wedged through tenons. This was right at the limit of my skills.
