Contacted Baxter Performance today and they have a oil filter adapter which eliminates the cartridge on the 3.5L and uses a spin-on filter (wix# 51348). A bit pricey at $200 but filters are less expensive and much easier to replace. Over the life of the truck it would not be a factor. Anybody done this?

Late reply but I wanna help you out. I put the Baxter Performance TS-301-BK on my 2014 Tundra. I love it. I as well made a custom (lolz) hole in my skid plate.

My long-term girlfriend and I are looking in to getting a 2019 Tacoma and this will be my first mod to it once we get it. Installing a TS-101-BK

    I'm not a fan

    1. The expense
    2. It adds another leak point
    3. The cost savings will be a wash

The cartridge setup is tried and true.

I got mine close to 1 year and no problems. Soon I need to change the oil.

Unless you first puncture the spin on filter to drain some oil before removing it, I think you might end up with a bit of a mess from spillage due to the oil held in the passages at the top of the filter. It can sometimes be tricky to hold onto a large slippery spin-on filter.
I suppose that if you have a large enough oil pan it’s not a big deal.

The cartridge filter has the drain plug at the bottom, to which you can attach the plastic drain piece and drain hose to prevent it from making that mess from spillage.

The adapters look cool. I’d like to know how clean, or messy it is to remove a filter with one installed.

I’ve dropped vertically remote mounted filters while changing them.

I will find out soon how it works. Not the first time I took a facefull of oil.

I installed mine last weekend. I drive about 30k a year and I have hated the wife's cartridge filter in her 08 Highlander since...08...

What do folks with this adapter do when taking car to dealer (assuming there is a reason)? Tell them to not tough the oil?

I'm at 33k seems like the only real maintenance besides oil, lube shaft and check bolts on drive are spark plugs at 60k.

Get the adapter. Most folks tell you to get a metal housing... Just use the cash toward the adapter.

Saying it is another leak point tells me you may not know what a pos the cartridge is. The frickin drain usually never works, the plug part seizes, you get rained on with oil doing the whole thing. No real way to torque the bitch either. I'm always doing it hand tight... Seems to work but no way....

The cartridge system has been around for decades. It does add another leak point. It's not going to show up in the first year, but the constant R & I of oil filters is going to have a negative effect on the the adapter o-ring. The product kind of reminds me of the Jeep 4.0 oil cooler / filter mount. Sooner or later it's going to leak

I had a leak with my cartridge filter on my Tundra on the last oil before I was going to install my Baxter Performance TS-301-BK.

Upon investigation when I took the cartridge filter apart the larger diameter o-ring was trashed. Could of been a freak deal with the o-ring supplied with the filter or it could have not.

Going on 1.5 years and two oil changes with my Baxter TS-301-BK and zero leaks so far.

Toyota TS-501-BK Cartridge to Spin-on Adapter (Universal)

Put it on my 2020 Toyota Tacoma, TRD Off-Road Double Cab, V6 3.5L about two months ago. What a well made, heavy duty oil filter adapter that replaces the cheap plastic cartridge style! Worth the price and convenience of using regular and better and less expensive tradition oil filters. As the company claims, it gives your engine better lubrication and protection at cold starts. Great customer service! I refer you to the great auto mechanic YouTube Channel “Scotty Kilmer” for a discussion of the Baxter Performance Oil Adapter versus the cheap plastic OEM cartridge style.

To me, they're less convenient. Not having an oil drain is going backwards. I hate oil, so anything that lessens a chance for spillage, I'm for.

    Also, Scotty :annoyed:

I was just confirming the price because he said he could buy the “less expensive traditional oil filters”

I can do 35 oil changes for the price of this adapter. Not to mention the added leak point. Sorry, replacing the filter element isn’t that hard.
