Going to regear soon to 4.88 gears. Should i upgrade to a rear locker? I have 16 DCSB Sport 4x4 it is a daily driver but in less then 2 years will be retiring to Flagstaff and plan on a lot of trips.Truck has bedrack with RTT, Winch up front, Full set of Mobtown steel skids, Rock sliders. And i hope to upgrade the rear bumper with a Hi clearance swingout. So not trying to be doing crazy rock crawling ,but want to be prepared. The added cost to add the locker , twin ARB compressor and needed extras looking at somewhere near $1800! Is it worth it or can i be happy without it? All input would be helpful !

    You are over thinking this.

    Do you need a locker?

If yes then it is worth it

If no then it is not worth having it if you will never use it.

We don't know how you plan to use your truck.

Your spot on with the over thinking ! I never had a locker on all my other toyota's. So maybe i should be asking for those who have a rear locker is it just night and day as for the wheeling improvement? First place that i will be heading to and spending a lot of time there is Moab.

All of my off road vehicles, I locked the fronts and did a limited in the rear. Never regretted it. I have a stock SR5 at the moment, at some point it will get locked and abused.

I say lock it while your in there.
You may not use it often but when you need it you will be happy it's there!
Definitely night and day difference if your on flexy rutted trails.

Better to have it when you not don't really need it than not have it when you really need it.
I have an SR5 and saving money now to add the ARB Locker.

If your already going to be in there replacing gears, your better off doing the air locker at the same time, you may never use it but that one day that you need it, you'll be damn glad you have it.

You gonna do front locker too? FYI i don't know how urgent you are wanting to do your gears but ARB does a promotion once a year if you buy their air lockers, you get a compressor for free

Definitely do it while you are doing the gears. I made the mistake of not thinking I needed a front locker, and just locked the rear when I regeared. After a few wheeling trips I realized that I now needed a front locker, and then wasted a bunch of money that I could have saved by doing it when I had everything apart.

Majority of your cost will be labor, so might as well do both while in there as its not really any extra labor involved except maybe running the air lines. I made this mistake once, I had gears put in my Ram and then less than a year later had them put a mechanical LSD in, so I paid for labor twice

Doing the lockers will also strengthen the diffs as well. Not a big problem with the Tacoma's, but Land Cruisers have had issues with the front diff's blowing up. Good solution to minimize that risk was to install an ARB locker.

And no doubt--you'll be in Moab. You will want it. No brainer.

If I were you I would just go over to ECGS, they sell pre assembled members with air lockers and gearing, then you ship your old members back for a credit

Another benefit of being fully locked is that the truck can crawl nice and slow with no wheel slippage. High throttle, wheelspin, and bouncing lead to broken parts. All of the breakages I have seen (ring/pinion and cv's) have been because of not being able to make an obstacle and having to give it too much gas to get through it.
