    So in regards to the charcoal filter on both the stock setup and the TRD one, I had read on a Tundra forum when I had my Tundra to remove the charcoal filter. It stated to disconnect the battery and remove the charcoal filter, at the same time I did a K&N filter install in the stock housing. Now I understand this is not necessary the same as the OP thread discussion but it brings up points that were discussed here. Once removed from the Tundra I averaged 17-18 mpg, 2 wheel model 5.7 after this. In regards to those who have installed the TRD kit and removed the charcoal filter how has your mpg readings changed, or have they stayed the same?

    For those who have installed on a 3rd gen, aside from a bit more pep down low, do you notice any change in the vibration frequency at all? Long shot, I know... what I've come to realize is that most all vehicles have a certain RPM frequency where vibes can be felt in the steering wheel and gas pedal... it's just that with most vehicles you feel it on acceleration, not at highway cruising speeds. Does the better intake equate to any smoother throttle in the 2k range?

    I have not noticed any vibrations or throttle fluttering. I love mine!! Very happy i did it! Aside from being peppier, the most noticeable improvement is the tranny no longer hunts for the correct gear all the time.

    Had mine installed for two weeks with the Pro Catback. Much peppier and MPG over 25. Was getting 23 average before. Just put my stock exhaust on the curb for bulk pickup, not going back.

    I'm starting to feel really silly even thinking of continuing to dump money into a truck that's rarely fun to drive unless offroad... but alas. If I had to choose BETWEEN replacing stock intake OR replace exhaust w/ cat back where will I see the best gains in throttle response and low end acceleration?

    Neither, in my experience any gaines to be had are in the high RPM band. I have both aFe intake and custom exhaust, including the y-pipe... Really feel it kick in around 4k RPM.

    I feel both are a CAI just one costs $400. You can but parts for the TRD CAI.

    I replaced the intake flow accelerator (fancy tech talk for the horn). It was easy. I already got the TRD filter last October. So I bought the Intake Flow Accelerator ($25 from ToyotaPartsDeal.com). The intake is much bigger and not blocked by the mud deflector

    K&N Air Filter Refresh Kit (I had it apart, The Air Filter was black)

    12 mm Socket wrench w/ long extension

    Carpet knife (I also pulled the charcoal filter)


    Step 1

    Remove Air filter and access and pull 3 bolts to remove the Air Box.

    Step 2

    Scruntch (technical term) the Intake Flow Accelerator so it looks like this. Place the Intake Flow Accelerator in the hole in the fender with the thin slot facing up.

    Step 3

    Place the Air Box on the Intake Flow Accelerator and bolt it in. Replace the Filter. Cut out the charcoal filter from the upper air box as you want. Close Up shop.

    I just installed it. Ill look to see if I have any massive HP gains or torque. :rofl:

    After reading about the different cai I ended up doing the same with my Tacoma but I bought the Trd filter and I can't say it made a huge difference but I do avg right at 19mpg with the Tacoma.

    I'm gonna add this on mine. I think with my TRD exhaust, This will sound amazing and im sure will add HP and MPG

    Just curious if this kit has to come with the carb compliant sticker for us in California. Any ideas? My stock setup already has the TRD rechargeable filter and has a carb sticker on the box. I was going to reuse the filter and piece together my setup.
    Edit:. By the way just ordered all the pieces today minus the filter for $279. They are running a free shipping this weekend only deal and didn't want to pass up.

    A couple things to consider for those of you who are not buying the TRD top box and the TRD intake pipe... The TRD top box and the intake pipe do offer a few benefits over stock in regards to flow.
    • The TRD intake pipe is a straight shot from the box to the throttle body as opposed to the stock version that is curved with an accordion
    • The TRD intake pipe has a smaller resonator with an accompanying smaller diameter pipe from the tube to the resonator
    • The TRD top box allows the TRD intake pipe to connect in a straight shot configuration instead of the curve.
    • The TRD top box doesn't have the plastic honeycomb in the intake tube portion
    • What it comes down to is there is better air flow with the TRD intake tube but the only way to connect it to the filter box is with the TRD top box (the stock top box tube is angled and doesn't allow the TRD intake tube to line up correctly).
    Now, do any of these actually have a benefit other than looks and sound? No clue. But I did want to point out that the TRD top box and TRD intake tube are designed with better air flow in mind and are not simply all for aesthetics. There might be a misconception about this in some of these posts. Just wanted to point this out. Purely informational, nothing more (not trying to start a flame war). Again, I have no evidence saying the TRD parts mentioned in this post make any real-world performance differences. The do change the sound signature and it does add some TRD flare under the hood. That much is certain.

    I never read any mentioning of the fact that the air box lid is larger. Usually, a larger volume chamber after the filter can increase throttle response. It's what a lot of other aftermarket intake companies do too. Great review! I'm big on dyno proven performance, but throttle response is also nice to improve and it won't show up on a dyno.
