FYI, I found at least two people on TW that have run their 3rd gen empty with no problems.

I very nearly ran mine dry... probably to 0.2 gallons.
Using SGII, it read:
10.9 gallons at ~1/2
6.4 at ~1/4
~3.1 at fuel warning light
~2.2 at E, "Please Refuel", 0 miles DTE
The needle never goes below the empty line (needle centers on the left edge at its' lowest).
(SGII reads 19.1 and 19.2 with a full tank.)

Below about 2.2 the SGII reading gets pretty wild. It seems to want to stick on 1.3 even before it should be that low and it never goes below 1.1 (skips 1.2 among other tenths). With an estimated 0.4 left, I thought I may have felt the engine stumble a bit; so, I drove to the gas station and idled for a while. It ran smooth. The SGII mostly said 1.1; but, still read 1.3 maybe 25% of the time. I got tired of waiting. I began to fill up. I stopped a couple of times to compare the pump to SGII, the difference was always 0.2 (this is where the 0.2 remaining estimate comes from).

The pump first stopped at 21.236. I ended up pumping 23.544, filling all the way up the neck as I did the tank before. I had driven 588.6 miles... Damn, I could have made 600. That comes out to exactly 25 mpg... EXACTLY! The computer said 25.0 (dealer lost me 0.2mpg at my 10k service, and it said 25.3 before I started idling).

TL;DR:
In the future, I would feel confident in burning ~2.6 gallons after fuel light or ~1.7 gallons after "Please Refuel". I drove ~50 miles past "Please Refuel" (but I was getting ~30mpg; then idled a couple tenths away).

Very nice, thanks for sharing! I think I might start topping off a little bit. This will help me get back to NJ where gas is cheaper, without having to fuel up earlier than I want to.

Fueling up 2 to 3 times a week gets pretty old. I would kill for a larger tank in this thing.

 

I was on my second trip in my truck and didnt think about the fact I was driving into a strong head wind while traveling at 80 mph. Truck was telling me I had 100 mi left and figured I had plenty of time to fill up. I was wrong, That 100 mi left dropped very fast and before I could find a gas station it dropped to 0. I think I went another 20 miles or so before I finally found an exit with a gas station. I was a little worried about running out of gas but luckily I still had about 2 gallons left. Did the math to see my mileage and it came out <14mpg with the only mods on the truck being new wheels and tires, 265/70r17 Ko2's. From then on if my truck tells me that I have <100mi I fill up immediately. I probably wont add extra gas storage to the truck until I decide its time for a rear bumper w/swingout. I've never ran out of gas in my 19 yrs of driving and dont want to ever let it happen. I'd rather use spare gas from cans before I actually run out.

 

Been driving since 1966. Never have I run out of gas in a vehicle. Just never have gotten hung up on how much is left when the gauge hits empty.

 

I'll toss in my experience here -

Had about 1/4 a tank and ended up getting involved in a little towing project.

We had to go about 25 miles.

What I was towing was this fort, didn't weigh that much, but the roof made for some major wind resistance. To go 55 it was a 3rd gear pull, computer registered 6mpg. Do the math... quarter tank plus 6mpg, plus kind of a remote location with gas still a few miles away meant a bit of a pucker factor.

While still towing @ 6mpg, refuel now light came on. I drove another 6 miles while still towing, and then about 15 empty.

When I filled I put 20.78 gallons in the truck.

Kind of want to get a Roto Pax and stash it in the back for times like this in the future. Doesn't come around much but the piece of mind would have been wurf.

I wanted to revisit this thread with some new info regarding my question on how far the gas gauge needle drops. Mine was continuously dropping below the "E" line today before my fill today. It looks like it may drop as far below the line as it rises above it on a fill as I suspected.

When the fuel light came on I reset Trip B and drove 38miles before filling. I think I had another 31 miles before being empty. This wasn't my best tank at ~23.3 MPG. Best has been 23.88.

 

I was going home on the interstate on my Yamaha Raider when it ran out of gas in the fast lane. The trucker behind me held up traffic for me by driving down the center strip. I was really lucky because the off ramp was about an eight mile ahead and don't Ya know it a 76 Station at the bottom.That Raider had a low fuel warning light that would often come on during my ride to work 50ish miles round trip. I was good for three trips to work and back so I didn't pay the light too much attention. On the day I ran out of gas the low fuel light didn't come up until I was on the way home. Reason I was in the fast lane, I was actually headed across the river to Az. to fill up with out a slightest concern of running out of gas. So that said, I wouldn't put all my trust in the results of this experiment.

That was bridgeport, ca. I had been on us-395 south with the empty light on for way too long

 

Last time we ran out of gas was in a chevy 1500 crossing the border into new york...spent an extra night there after seeing the fuel pump go bye-bye to.
