Some pictures of the recent install I did on my truck. Thanks to @RandyRiot for hooking me up with the head unit. He still has a non JBL one available if anyone is interested. (link)

    image.jpg

It took a little modification but it actually fits pretty well. I have a 2005 Jbl taco with a wiring harness I made. Once you get the bezel to fit it is pretty much plug and play with the 2014+ wiring. There is lots of info on this site on how to make these work with older trucks so I'll spare you all those details. Probably not a mod for everyone but if you're good with a dremel it only took about an hour or so of cutting and sanding.

    image.jpg

I still want to clean up the edges a little more and possible repainted the bezel but I'm happy with it so far. This one replaces the '14 non nav. Touchscreen that I accident cracked so this is definitely an upgrade!

I saw @Jerez post a pic of his a long time ago and have been interested in doing this if someone could get it in and it looking right.

So the 2nd gen radio bracket bolted right up to the 3rd gen unit and then bolted into the OEM holes on the 2nd gen no problem?

And all the steering controls work?

I guess my only other thing is I’d want to somehow change out the blue backlighting.

It’s techinallt the same radio. Just different front face/screen.
So it bolts right up to the 2nd gen brackets

Cool, I just wanted to make sure cause I know the face as a whole is a larger dimension than the stock screen in my 13.

Have you messed with the button backlighting? It would drive me nuts if I’m stuck with blue LEDs when the rest of my dash is white/green.

I’ll have to wait until these start being sold for much less than $500 before I give it a shot.

The blue lights are kind of annoying. I've swapped the LEDs out on older radios so I might give that a try someday. My next move with it will be adding the two wires from the obdII data link to see if it will read my engine data. Need to source an xm antenna too. Not that I use xm but I would like to have a complete install.

I used the mounting brackets from '12 radio. Like it was mentioned, the head units are basically the same as the others, they just have a larger faceplate.

    Haven’t switched the LEDs
But I have taken it apart and it’s the same LEDs as our 2nd gen cluster

But also smaller LEDs between those so I neee to get around to changing them out probably next month when I get some time

On a side note looks like Siennas used a very similar radio if not the same (part number is different though).

And looks like they are on eBay for less than $200

    @fbconvert

Sorry again for bombing your thread with all my questions. I meant to ask, do you have the 12+ steering controls as well? If so, do they all function like they are supposed to?

And do you have Sat radio? I have Sirius and I am hoping I can just hook up my aftermarket Toyota module that was made for my 13 rather than spend another $200 to get an OEM kit.

No problem, sorry for the delayed reply I have been busy the last few days. I am not sure which year my steering wheel is, but I do know it is from a 4runner.

(my truck is a mess... don't judge)

While the switches appear to change over the years, toyota has pretty much standardized the way they actually work. If you're really bored and want to know more about how they work you can check out this thread I wrote a long time ago where I actually made my own switches (link). Anyways the short answer is yes they work with the new radio, except for the DISP switch, which is not on the '12 Tacoma steering wheel so I am not surprised it doesn't work.

The radio did come with the XM module. It should work with any toyota headunit... again they are really good at standardizing their systems across all models and years.

Hey man, yeah this one was a long time coming. I've been wanting to switch back to a Jbl head unit for a while since I have had nothing but bad luck with those Jbl amp interface harnesses.

Work brought my family and I to the East Coast a few months ago. It's been a big step for us and I'm still not sure how I feel about it yet, except that it's growing on me.

Nicely done! I’m still rocking mine. I need to get a real OEM backup camera. The $15 eBay special really sucks in low light.

Do you have a spare surround? I have one from a 2014. The head unit is good but the screen is cracked.

Would you sell the surround by itself? I've purchased a 3rd gen unit as well. I just need to find the surround and brackets.

What do I need to do to make a 2018 JBL work in my 2013 with JBL? I looked at it tonight and all but (I think) 2 plugs wouldn't fit
