Most muffler shop around here will automatically say bad cat.

Since they know I can't tell a good or bad cat visually, and they need the businesses.....

I dropped my truck off this morning at Advanced Muffler in Pasadena, I asked them if they could verify that it was the cats and they said they don't have the equipment to test for that. But since I already had Toyota diagnose it, I figured I'd go ahead and pull the trigger. They're going to install front/rear Magnaflows on my truck today for $625 (the $550 they quoted Toyrunner in the other thread was for Catco cats, which don't have as good of reviews as Magnaflow does). Still a great deal as far as I'm concerned, hopefully this does the trick

I am following yours. Remember the name of the guy you spoke to? What did you think of the store?

I will take mine there in December.

Have you done your 02 sensors already also?

Yeah my 02 sensors were replaced last year along with my air/fuel sensor when I had a different code, so I don't believe the current issue is related to those

Guy's name was Curtis I believe but I'll confirm that when I go to pick it up later today

Appreciate it. Tell Curtis he will get a few more customers next 6 weeks.

Is he a mechanic or a muffler only shop? Any idea what the rate is?

I have a car that I need new shocks installed in the front, and looking for someone to help

Mine stayed of for 6 months the first time I reset it, certain conditions where the cats get really hot are when it gets set of again. Mine would only come up again when offroading and up some hill climbs. Otherwise there was no code and no pending code. But the cats were still operating under spec.

Ended up costing me $675 with tax and because they had to replace my exhaust hangars as well, I knew at least one of them was broken because my exhaust had been clanking against my tcase skid for some time now. Apparently though my whole exhaust was slightly twisted from being unhooked there so I'm glad they fixed it for me.

Only drove a couple miles from the shop to my place but I feel there's a noticeable difference in performance now that I'm not running with clogged up cats. Hope this helps my gas mileage come back up a bit now too, it was getting worse and worse over the past several months.

will do, I've been scanning it every day since lol. No codes so far which I'm happy about. Only thing I am getting which has me a little concerned is a strong smell of burning plastic coming from under the truck where the cats are when the truck is hot. It's definitely not a burning sulfur/rotten egg smell (which would indicate bad cats), and from what I've read online some say it's normal for the break-in period. I left a message with the shop that installed them to see what they say.

Since you are such a smell expert, I am tempted to have you smell my exhaust and have you let me know if it is CAT or should i replace the 02 or just try to beat the CEL by the Smog guy in january
