2006 Impulse Red Double Cab Long Box Tacoma
I just purchased my first Tacoma last Friday and took delivery yesterday. I was driving back from California and spent the night in Bend Oregon. The next morning as I was getting ready to finish my trip north to Spokane I saw an Impulse Red Tacoma sitting at the Toyota dealer so I stopped in and took a look at it. Its a 2006 base model, double cab with long box, 4x4. I was hesitant when I saw that it had 192k miles but despite its high miles it was in remarkable condition. It was a one owner truck, originally sold by this dealer in 2006 and the service records were impeccable. Every oil change and every required service was completed when it was due. That there just told me it was a very well taken care of truck. No leaks underneath, no rust either.

So I made a low offer, it was accepted, we did the paperwork and I continued my drive home. Four or five days later my spouse drove me back to Bend to pick up the truck. I left the dealer with a full tank of gas and because I wasn't sure what kind of mileage I would get I stopped 50 miles later in Redmond to top off the tank. Drove the speed limit which varied between 45 and 65 mph. The tank would only take 2 gallons. 25mpg? Must be a fluke but I wasn't complaining.

The next leg was 100 miles to Biggs Junction Oregon. I was a bit worried that the fuel gauge wasn't working as the needle barely moved so I decided to just top off the tank anyway. This leg I drove between 55 and 65mph and averaged 26.5 mpg. That just didn't sound right either considering its only supposed to get 20mpg highway. But who am I to complain.

The last leg I drove between 70 and 75 mph and averaged 21mpg by the time I got home. I'm just going to take this as a sign that the engine, despite is 192k miles, is probably in pretty good shape if its getting this kind of mileage. At least that is what I like to think.

Now its sitting in the driveway. I need to read up on which fluids to use but here shortly I would like to get the differentials and transmission fluid changed (trans was last doe at 90k miles so its a bit overdue). Here in Spokane we get some pretty cold temps, I'm wondering if I should install a block heater of some kind. Only other thing I noticed is that at times the brakes squeal every so slightly so I may have to put new pads on my list as well.

I have to say, it drove really really nice. And I'm glad to now have a truck to go pick up wood with so now I shouldn't hear any more complaints about hauling wood in the back of the CRV.
