    Hey forum folks...
I inherited my father’s 2015 Tacoma, doublecab, off-road when he passed away this past May. My wife lost the key and, since it has not been used as a primary vehicle, it’s been sitting in our driveway for about 4 1/2 months. We had a new metal key made by the dealership today to at least open the doors. I tried using the metal key to start it and it actually turned over but it would not start. Does anyone know if that is due to the key not having a transponder?

Yes the ECU is in immobilizer lock out mode. The truck will have to be towed to your dealer and have the ECU immobilizer re-seeded not a big deal more of a nuisance.

Ugh. Thanks, John. It’s going to be a $325 nuisance since I have to get a new key. Ce la vie...

Walmart makes duplicate transponder keys for $60, granted you need a transponder key available so they can duplicate it though

I'd let her pay for a new key. Just saying.... I would if I had lost it.

See if your triple aaa or insurance has roadside assistance with lockout. You might be able to work that angle for at least towing.

Since you already have the keymade, just call a mobile locksmith to come out a make you a transponder key and program it

But isn’t that the same as him paying for it?

it was $165 to have two transponder keys made for my 07 but I was able to take it to the locksmith rather than having to call him out.

He needed an existing key to copy, right? I think the OP will have to go to the dealer to have a new transponder key. The ECU needs to be reseeded, you are making a new master key under the assumption you lost all your original transponder keys and there are none to copy.
