It goes...finally on home turf again. Almost stopped and hugged the "welcome to MT" sign on the side of the road today. Was taking in the sights around Utah for 10 days

It’s a great place!! I’d love to stay there but I can’t build my career there! So Missoula is the next spot!

    What's in Missoula jobs wise?
    Or MT in general?
Any areas have big manufacturing or R&D centers?

I've been looking online every now & then to see what sorts of places are hiring engineers across MT. Looks like there aren't many and that they pay less than in other states.

in a state as rural as MT..you'll struggle to find wages that can compete with other states especially for engineering. Same goes for ID or Wy. The trade off is that cost of living is generally a lot lower. Plus..you get to live somewhere awesome.

Almost nothing manufacturing wise around here though. Other than small time companies.

I don't know about other aspects of cost of living but your groceries are quite a bit more expensive up there compared to TN & GA. I'm tempted to pack dry goods to bring next time I visit.

On a 20% pay cut and 30% increase in grocery costs, I'd go broke just feeding my family.

Thats due to shipping. We aren't near any major ports really. Salt Lake city, Denver, or Seattle are the nearest "big cities". Not to mention brutal winters that close interstates regularly.

It's also why hunting is big out here. Can get hundreds of pounds of game a year for pretty cheap if you are so inclined.

Its no paradise...and we like it like that. haha

It's a paradise if you enjoy a certain amount of struggling and suffering. It can be a hellish nightmare for the uninitiated and unprepared.

Sadly not alot for engineering. If there is its usually a good bit lower in pay.

This..In all the areas I have lived, even if for short times, its amazing what I realize I learned as common knowledge that is such a foreign idea to other people.

Bozeman has few R&D jobs, but I do not know in what fields or if there are any openings now.

There are good engineering jobs if you are in construction. Aside from that the best jobs in the state are in the professional services fields, doctors, lawyers, CPAs etc. Even then you will make less than elsewhere, but not terribly less. There are plenty of good craft/operator jobs in construction as well, but it generally includes a lot of traveling.

I have been back and forth between PA and MT a few times and thought groceries were comparable. The major difference that I found was housing. 250k doesn't go nearly as far as it does in most places. I expect housing to get worse over my life time in Missoula. I think Bozeman will pull back before too long, they have plenty of space to build, there is just more demand than supply right now. Missoula is running out of places to build quickly.

In this pic, the air is full of forest fire smoke. As you can see, I didn't let it kill my good time.

    image.jpg

In this one you see there's a couple feet of snow on the ground. It didn't stop me from walking the dog.

Nature is a cruel and beautiful bitch. If you don't like it rough, she'll make you the bitch.

Whether it's prolonged winter storms with temps at -40 and sustained winds, spring monsoons, 100 degree temps with 9% humidity and choking smoke in the air, or a beautiful day spent enjoying the scenery - you have to find ways to love it, or this place isn't the right place. That's why it's the last best place. Because it's not for everyone.
