One of my friends inherited his mother's '01 4runner with 300K and it's giving him some problems; slow oil leak, minor electronics issues ( radio display, alarm goes off randomly lol), and he's recently had to replace the Alternator and battery. This are all the problems I'm aware of...

I want to buy it from him and make it a trail rig.

It's got dents and scratches which I don't care how it looks.

My questions is, Anyone driven/owned something similar in year model and milege?

if so, am I about to buy a headache? or does the Toyota reputation for reliability strong with this ho runner model?

Any input is greatly appreciated I'm gonna set up some threads across other websites but I thought I would start at home first.

    Thanks in advance guys!

I personally wouldn't trust any vehicle with 300k on it's critical components to be a reliable trail rig unless I was prepared to put a lot of work into replacing/upgrading things. Sounds like a headache to me, Toyota's reputation is great and all but 300k is a lot for any vehicle. If it were going to be a daily driver then sure, but when you're out in the middle of nowhere wheeling you don't want to have to worry about things like that. At least I don't.

you make a good point. being stuck in the middle of nowhere sounds no fun. I've seen on T4R some similar yr models have hit 400K. maybe it's destined to remain on pavement for the rest of it's days.

I've seen old trucks/SUV's get turned into dedicated trail rigs before, presumable with a lot of miles on them...but they've had a lot of work done and put into them to make them more reliable. And/or they were owned by someone who knew the vehicle and it's history well enough to trust it, it'd be especially hard for me to trust a rig with that many miles on it if I wasn't the one that put those miles on.

Depending on how they have been with maintenance (and what the price is like) I would still look at it. I always like getting rigs where I know the history.

I have done it multiple times, BUT then I sased them and only used them inconjunction with a tow rig. That allowed me to be able to bum a ride back to my tow rig and then go into town for parts or have my crawler strapped out to my rig so i could just tow it home.
