The day the truck came home to Oregon with me all the way from Montana. The truck was completely stock when I got it.

The first thing to do was get rid of the grandpa look. I had some Method NV wheels put on the truck, wrapped with Cooper stt pro tires. Along with the wheels and tires, I put Bilstein 5100's up front, with OME 883 coils. In addition, an add a leaf was put in the stock leaf pack to lift the rear a few inches.

    IMG_5848.jpg

Eventually I ditched the stock leaf pack with the AAL and purchased some OME Dakar leafs. Here's a photo of me "testing" out the new suspension setup.

    IMG_6139.jpg

I found a used steel tube bumper for sale and jumped on it. I love how the bumper wraps tightly around the front of the truck. The bumper also included a chinese light bar.

At about this point in the build I started getting really interested in the overland scene. I decided to start taking the build in that direction so I could spend the coming summer taking various trips living out of the tacoma. The first order of business was to install a dual battery system. I ended up going with the Columbia Overland dual battery tray, Odyssey deep cycle batteries, and IBS system. In addition, I used a blue sea fuse box to wire all my electric accessories to one location.

After installing the dual battery system, I installed an onboard shower system that uses the engine coolant to heat up water that is pumped through it. I figured this would be nice to have when spending multiple days living out of the truck.

Finally, no overland setup is complete without a RTT. I found a used CVT tent near me for a decent price and jumped on it. I then purchased a canopy for the CVT to mount to. I liked the security of the canopy better than a bed rack setup.

I picked up some used donahoe extended travel coilovers off of another forum, and Camburg UCA's from Wheelers.

I mounted a Shurflo pump and heat exchanger under the hood.

SWEEEEET clean build man, looks good, i m running bilstein 5100’s and ome 883 on my truck right now but thinking of switching to a extended travel coilover to use the potential the spc upper arms have, i was wondering how much of a difference did u find doing the switch was, worth the money?

Nice build. Everything looks really clean. I like how your onboard water is all contained under the hood.

Sorry if you already said this. What is the model on your water pump? Where did you find the fittings you put at the front as well?

You have quite a bit of preload on them it looks like, that and the 700lb springs with little front end weight is what's making them so harsh I bet. I'm having the same issue with my Kings, a little too much preload and 600lb springs with no added weight. My 5100s rode softer on 500lb springs, but when I add my skids and eventually a plate bumper it should help it out.

I'm not sure what brand it is or who fabricated the bumper. I bought the bumper used off of someone who didn't know either unfortunately. I'm pretty sure it's just a one off bumper because I've never seen another like it. I actually get asked about my bumper all the time by toyota enthusiasts.

The water pump and heat exchanger I used are in the links below. I think if I were to do it again I would use a larger heat exchanger. With the current heat exchanger I can only get luke warm water unless I re circulate it. The fittings on the front are just garden hose quick connects connected to a 90 degree pvc joint, and then barbs with water hose clamped on. I then ran the two water lines up behind my headlight and into my engine bay. I actually had to cut a little bit of the metal behind to headlight to make room for the water lines to pass through, but you can't really tell unless you took the headlight off. All the brackets in the shower system are just brackets I made with some sheet metal.

The image of the coil overs that I have above is when I had some old worn out 650's on. The 700's have significantly less preload. The truck actually has a lot more weight up front then it looks like. The bumper alone is heavy as hell. I also have two 50 lb deep cycle batteries and a steel skid plate.

I just ordered some longer 14'' 650 lb coils. I'm hoping the added height will help support the weight of the truck without so much preload.

Ah yeah that is quite a bit of front end weight. I'm thinking I might do the same with my Kings (longer coils) if I don't end up with a softer ride after adding weight.

Too bad about the bumper being a one off, I really like how it hugs the lines of the front end. I've been looking at plate bumpers because normally tube bumpers look funny to me, but that one looks awesome.

The design is pretty simple. You should just take a picture of the bumper to a fabricator and see if he can copy it.

The key is to find the right height/weight coils for the lift you want, and to support any front end weight you have. Adjusting the preload is fine to an extent but you don't want to crank it up too much or the ride starts to suffer considerably.
