I agree. Some of their REI brand stuff is excellent, and cheaper than the name brand. I buy the REI wool socks, and they are both more comfortable and longer lasting than Smartwools. I also prefer their long sleeve travel shirts over similar brands such as ExOfficio.

Sorry- location was provided by a friend who knows of some great spots. If I tell everyone he'll start withholding information... ;)

I'm always willing to share the more frequently traveled spots.

Yep. I've got a friend who has shown me some fairly unknown petro sites and was specifically told that if I shared the info with jackholes I wouldn't be invited too often after. Some things are better left to find. It is a wonderful feeling discovering places than always having them all over the internet.

Looking at that pic is making me brainstorm. It looks familiar but not so familiar that I've been there.

I had a feeling the answer would be along those lines. I knew it was too good to be true. :)

Exactly. My friend gave me the info because he knew I wouldn't share it. Another nice spot nearby had 5 vehicles and many people. I was going for solitude that weekend.

    This is where I started.

Didn't have GPS when I got the book about 11 years ago. I've found a handful of cool spots off these main trails as well. Mostly because I didn't have GPS and took a wrong turn...

I'm no stranger to land nav or pouring over topos for weeks on end. I've backpacked for many years in the high Sierra, and on backpacking forums, for the most part, folks are happy to share locations of favorite spots and even give Lat/Long, UTM, MGRS coordinates and even access tips. It's unfortunate that the off-roading crowd is less respectful, if it is causing places to get ruined due to information sharing.

The backpack crowd is typically more respectful of access issues and overall cleanliness. It's hard to backpack in 50 beer cans and an old TV.

I once backpacked a suitcase of beer in 13 miles. I switched to whisky after that.

It's a thule T2 that's been modified. Made it so the back can be opened with the bikes on and not having to tillt or even touch the rack (although it will still tilt down with the bikes on or fold up when the bikes are off). It's also much higher. It was actually very easy, just modified the hitch part.
