Weird right. Trd off road dbl cab v6 to sr access cab 4cyl. Both manual transmissions.

I gotta say the power difference is noticeable in different areas but it's not as drastic as thought. At 2k rpm the 4cyl is more useful. Small hills don't lug my truck out at 2k like it did in the v6

With the manual trans the v6 screamed above 4k, but how often was I doing that. Not very. I'm happier with the 4cyl. I was so shocked by this because I was nervous about testing it out and feeling it be a sluggish pile. But I instantly fell in love with the little 4.

It makes me wonder why people have been negative about it.

I'm actually going the other way. Going from a 2.7 auto to a 3.5 manual. I loved my 2.7 but it didn't have the pulling power I needed for my travel trailer. I also wanted more creature comfort and a trailer hitch that the 4 doesn't have. Both trucks get around the same mileage so to me it made sense to choose the 6.

Either they have never driven one or these people believe 100% that the money they spent on two more smaller diameter smaller stroke pistons was supposed to net them assloads of power over the 4. But that only comes out during certain applications, and not by much. Obviously people don’t like to hear that, But whatever. Usually the extent of their thinking on the matter is “2 more cylinders is MORE therefore...” and that’s it.

    I'm actually going from a 4cyl to a v6, difference isn't as drastic as I thought but it's noticeable.

In reality the 4cyl is more than enough for 95% of the time in my case, but you know how it is with vehicles, sometimes we become greedy fucks lol

I just remembered once, on this forum, a poster mentioned how (not in exact words but close) I’m “dreaming if I think his 6cyl off road won’t blow the doors off my 4 uphill, not even close” still cracks me up. Like that could even happen. Doors are made of metal.

I just keep the revs high daily on my V6MT. Pulls hard up hills and mountains if I don't shift past 4th.

However you look at it it's still 278hp compared to 159hp.

I was very surprised when I drove my brothers 4cyl regular cab 2 hrs back home. It would be fine for most of my needs but I had to have a double cab for the kiddos and a mt. His truck feels like a little go cart compared to the Silverado I had though!

I’m gonna be honest, I love driving a truck shaped go cart wide open all over the place

That's because Toyota totally screwed the pooch with this automatic transmission paired with the minivan motor. Shift* mapping is awful. Put it in s-mode and set it at 6th gear it will help a bit. ECT holds gears almost too aggressively and it's not pleasant to drive either.

My 4 cylinder auto is great and I would keep it if I hadn't bought a travel trailer. I just needed a little more truck for the highway in headwinds. If I wasn't pulling a trailer I would have chosen the 4 for the new truck.

To each their own, and as I've never driven a 4cyl Tacoma I will not comment on that. Anyone that hasn't driven/ doesn't own a 3rd gen V6 should maybe do the same. Don't believe all the hate at face value.

I will say that the V6 trucks are neutered by their stock ECM coding. For your hard earned money, you get laggy throttle, bogging, non-linear power delivery that the civic crowd would love, and a noticeably higher power band than the outgoing V6.
Most people on a test drive interpret all this as a complete lack of power/sluggishness... then enter OVtune.

You can go read the development/transmission specific threads for more info, but having run two versions of the tune now I will say this - there is more HP/torque to be had in the 2GR, and it comes in lower in the power band. Driveability has been greatly improved and the truck feels light on it's feet. I know, I know, why the hell would some idiot (well, hundreds of us actually) spend almost $800 on a product that makes the truck perform the way it should have from the factory? Because if you think Toyota is going to fix it for their customers over considerations such as CARB/CAFE, well you may be waiting quite a while.

Anyway, I've gone from wanting to get rid of my truck to actually enjoying the drive - all while patiently awaiting release of the first M/T specific tune. By all accounts it's gonna be awesome!

Why do I have to pay more money to get the truck NOT to drive like dogshit?

Good question - and my answer is in my previous post. Toyota had your enjoyment of the truck waaay down on their priority list.
It was either 800 bucks or thousands lost in trade in.

Isn't the difference in torque in the 3.5 and 2.7 only like 70 ft/lbs. Also the 2.7 has a lower peak torque which helps with driveability.

Test drove the 2.7, not for my driving style. Not enough get up and go. Great for everything else.
