Rear diff gear oil for 11 TRD Sport

In doing some searching, I found this:

So, that rules me out having to do an LSD additive. Got that. I also checked the manual and it states to use 75W85 GL-5 and I read that most people on here just put the

75W-90 back in, that's fine. But, what I can't seem to narrow down an opinion on is: do most put a synthetic gear oil in or go with a conventional fluid? With my truck approaching the 60k mile mark and cold weather starting to set in, I was going to go ahead and knock out this rear diff service myself. I know oil threads can be open ended to hell so I tried to do as much searching I could.

 

Synthetic(Mobil 175/90 is what I use, no real reason not to with stock gears. Most gear manufacturers recommend using a heavier conventional when gearing down but also recommend changing more often due to harsh conditions. For everyday driving conditions every 30k is recommended.

Yeah, daily driving is what I do 99% of the time and that's just highway driving. Most offroad I get is driving through a yard or field. I do occasionally pull a bass boat.

 

My .02. I've always been partial to synthetics. For me, advantages outweigh the disadvantages. More expensive... Yes but extended drain intervals, less waste. Synthetics tend to be more stable, less shear and if you do need a ls additive most are already compatable for that- royal purple being one that I know for sure. I know there are also a lot of guys out there who like Mobil also. The one variable would be if you're in an area/ use where you might get water contamination then just go low cost as you'll be draining way before the oil has broken down.

 

I run 75w90 mobil 1 ls. Get it at aap with online coupon, like 9 bucks a bottle

 

I went ahead and ordered the crush rings earlier from Amazon as well as a 10mm hex socket. I got the gear oil while I was at it and it came to $7.14/qt.

Synthetic here too. Run Royal Purple and have had no issues. I would've been fine running mobil 1 but the store only had enough Royal purple. Cost damn near $70 for the 4 quarts.

 

Does the LS matter in mine since it doesn't have "true LSD"?

 

No it doesn't effect anything.

 

I prefer the synthetic oils and that's what I used in my '11 DCSB differentials.

I like to update threads that I start. I went ahead and did the three services this week; rear differential, transfer case, and front differential. All using the tutorials I found on here. I had also got the crush rings and washers using the grab bag packet that Amazon has:

The fluid changes is some of the easiest I have done. Everything is easily accessible, except the tight fit on filling the front diff back up and trying to keep my head lamp on my head from falling off. I don't think mine had ever been changed and I was at 60k so I have a good peace of mind knowing that it's good for many more miles.

 

I like the Amsoil Severe gear and it doesn't have the horrible rear end grease stink. IMO, the locker even worked a little better on Amsoil. Still sketchy to get it locked, but better. if you saw how it works, you'd understand why it does what it does. The truck is still on the road at 205k so something is going right.

Remember to remove your fill cap before you drain it just to insure that you can get it open. Otherwise you could drain it and not be able to refill it.

 

Don't mean to hash up and old thread but I want to change out my front and rear Diff's fluid, I have a 2015 TRD Sport 4x4 and am going to use the Mobil 1 like I did last time, but forgot which one I need. And do I need new gaskets and such?

 

I just use 75-90 mobil 1, and I always replace the crush washers

No, you don't need to worry about it. IIRC the only ones that need that are earlier sports that have the mechanical LSD.

 

So get the bottle that doesn't have the LS on it?

 

I'm running that stuff now and everything has been fine Doesn't necessarily mean I'm right though
