Hey everyone - First post on this forum after recently picking up my 2013 taco. What I am wondering is if anyone has built a dual swing out tire for 2 spare tires. I see a lot of pre-runner style trucks with the dual spares cut into the bed or somehow installed in the bed. I've seen swing out bumpers for single tires, and dual swing out bumpers for a tire and jerry can. But nothing I see off the shelf that has a dual swing out for 2 tires.

I called CBI and they are willing to build one for me but it is rather pricey. The main reason being I have to fork up some cash to have them cut out some new brake lights and turn signals as we are assuming having 2 spares will cover up the entire factory brake lights. I run 285s so they aren't huge but probably just enough to have issues with inspection or police, not to mention the safety factor.

Has anyone on the forum seen this done on a taco before? I'm looking to see if this has been and what advice from the process. I know it is a fair amount of weight on the rear but having dual swing out arms will at least help with spreading the weight out across different hinges. It may require some suspension tuning after the install so I am aware of that. What other thoughts do people have out there? Btw, the reason for dual spares is because this is my overland build. My bed is completely stocked with fridge and overlanding accessories and space is always a commodity. Thanks!

    -Ben

I am not carrying two tires, but you can get an idea from my dual swing out. should work fine.

The main issues will come with them being too wide next to eachother, it looks like you have some kind of cap or rack on your truck so get a single tier swing out rack and mount the other one on the rack on top of your truck. That what I’d do at least.

Im running 285s as well, You can fit a 285 in the stock spare location under bed, and one on swingout if you really need two spares.

Although I opted to go for a single full size spare in the stock location (One of the main reasons I went with 285s), and I carry the Viair 450p with a good plug kit, and the swingout will be for jerry cans, and other accessories.

Putting one of the roof won't work for me for a few reasons. I have solar panels in the front, and the rooftop tent goes in the back when mounted. Not to mention the truck wouldn't fit in my garage lol.

I'll have to check the stock spare location. I know I put in a high clearance exhaust that maaaaaaaybe in the way of that. But that could be a good idea.

The idea for having 2 rear tires came from the need for me to be able to transport my spare tire and 2 mountain bikes. Putting all that weight on 1 hinge just would not work. Having 2 spares mounted side-by-side and perpendicular to the road would give me a great mounting point to custom fit some bike racks. I have a swing out on my jeep in the picture above so I'm used to them and know the pros and cons. I'm just curious if anyone else has done it.

Didn’t realize that you have already used you roof space, have you thought about stacking them one in front of the other? However that could put too much leverage of you bumper, but you might be able get away with it.

Or you could look into a front mount

The only issue is you have to add some kind of aftermarket braklights to run on the road, or remove the tires when driveing on roads. But its till a good idea

@osinrider04 I would contact Billy at http://www.bruteforcefab.com/ Send him an email through his website, and he will contact you. Or you can try IG too.

I saw he recently did a custom bumper with dual swingouts for around $1600. And he lets you pay half down, and then half upon completion + shipping. Its nice to split up that large of a payment.

High clearance exhaust should just be cut behind the axle at the turn down - free mod.

My 33.5" spare fits fine in the stock location with the retention tabs bent ever so slightly. The exhaust isn't hot enough to cause problems that far aft. My tire sits snug against the pipe.

What about a 31” with stock exhaust?

^^ These are definitely the coolest options.

You might be onto something here.

OP you could install a front mount hitch and hitch mounted spare tire carrier for an end result much like this -
    [IMG]

** Edit** - I'm an idiot... you have an ARB bumper  no front hitch...

I am not a fan of this look. Might as well put it on a roof rack, or land rover style, on the hood. Thus killing your visibility for overlanding

Just far enough to clear. It sits against the hitch, the exhaust pipe and the retention tabs. I have to raise the spare into place carefully and use a little "finesse" to get it to snug up into place. If I don't get it just right... I have found it will rub a patch of dirt off my diff.

I was careful not to bend the tabs too much. It's very easy to overdo that mod. The guys who cut the tabs off completely have reported the spare moving forward and actually wedging on top of the diff. Making for...a rough ride.

Nor am I, but it's a very easy and cost effective option. The dual swing out is the bees-knees!

My exhaust is stock, except for the small piece of the end I cut off - which is outboard of the tire. No real difference for our discussion.

Ok... I guess what I need to do is just get my hands on one of the same tires that I’m running now and just stick it up in place to see if it will work.
