Has anyone made the transition from 285s to 255s or vice versa? Would just like to hear some opinions on how they compare.

I had 285s on my previous Tacoma, and now 255s. The 255s win in every single way minus looks. The 285s poking out looked damn good, but that's about all they had going for them.

Capability-wise offroad, the 255s performed better? I'm running Spidertrax spacers currently, so it would push out the 255s a bit further than stock OR wheels, so that's a plus. My big disappointment with the 255s is the selection of tires for it. The Coopers look good, but I'd love a set in Duratracs

I didn't get too much time under my belt with the 285s before selling the truck, but I have plenty of trips with the 255s that I have on my current truck. 255s perform really well in all the conditions I've thrown at them.

Just cuz you asked...even though this thread is for stock suspension. 1.5" lift with Bilstein 6112/5160 and Headstrong 3 leaf AAL with overload left out.

Awesome. It’s interesting to me that some have problems and others have none. Lifted and non lifted.

Comes down to alignment. Those that have UCAs shouldnt have problems because you can adjust caster a lot more with aftermarket UCAs. more caster you run, the further your wheel will sit from the cab mounts and the closer it gets to the front fender. Front fender can be heated up and bent out of the way though unlike the cab mount.

I've had these BFG 255/85/16's on my stock TRD Off Road for about a week now, and contrary to many things I read, I did start to notice a little rubbing. The only rubbing has come from the front left tire, and only with forward weight transfer and a slight left turn (full lock has no rubbing). The outside edge of the tread was rubbing on the mud flap. I removed the two front mud flaps and also took a dremel and removed a small 1.5" triangle from the plastic fender flare under the mud flap, and now it has ample clearance, and no more rubbing.

PS- I've gotta say, the tall, skinny look really suits my style perfectly. It makes the truck gorgeous, even with no lift.

Thanks for the compliment! Here you go, Gents:

And for Doozy, here is where I dremeled off the approximately 1.5" plastic piece off the fender flare underneath the front mudflap. The orange circle shows you roughly where, and the bluish green dots show pretty close to where the plastic tab was. Cutting it off increased clearance by about 1". Don't mind the bright spot on the picture, that was just glare from my flashlight:

PS- I should add that cutting off that little plastic corner might not even be necessary. Removing the mud flap alone might have given it enough clearance not to rub there, but I figured why not just remove all doubt, and that little corner stuck out further than anything else after the mudflap was gone. I left enough material that the bolt right underneath it still works as intended.
