i have a 5 lug tacoma and I’m going to the the readylift leveling kit and get 31’ tires and my Taco is already pretty slow so I can’t imagine how the lift and tires are gonna do to it, so should I even regear? If so should it be to a 4.10 or 4.56? Or a different one??

Nothing. Those tires are small for a gear change. You want more power. Supercharger or turbo.

How big is your budget? Is your 5-lug manual or automatic transmission.

I would ignore the above person laughing at 31" ..

OEM wheel diameter is at 26.9" for the 215/70R15's, so going up to a 31" without regearing is going to have an impact.

You haven't been specific enough on the tire size you plan on upgrading to, but a 30.5" tire (245/70R16) calls for a regear to 3.73 for the manual, and 3.91 on the automatic. Both are gear-ratios found in the Toyota T100 series of a decade or two back. 4.56 will have you climbing trees.

    He's a 5 lug so it's a 4" jump in size as mentioned above. Doubt he's going 35s anytime soon :p

Actually, for the 5-lugs - anything above ~29.5" is 'worth it' . These trucks don't have the 4.10 gearing of the rest of the Tacoma line.

Having done what the OP is considering, i have to disagree with your opinion. Depending on his use, driving style and anticipated service life of the truck, it is well worth it. Going back to what his budget is, will determine whether it's worth it to him.

I still think a turbo would work better. And more fun.

Got a lot of stuff lol
4.10s and if you do it make sure to include some sort of a lsd as well. Might as well if your paying for it to be opened. If your manual you'll need a 3rd member from an auto (non elocker) Good luck

I'm sure it would be quite fun.. and expensive, going back to the OP, that might be a non-starter.. in any case, to take advantage of the Turbo, he'd really need to regear anyway to get that increase in power to the rear wheels, at a ratio that would allow the motor to work as it should.

Gearing really needs to be appropriate when it comes to performance mods ... putting in a header and doing a bit of other work to compensate for power loss/inappropriate gearing was a bit of a wasted effort, until i changed gearing to allow the motor to work as it should, without being handicapped by the 3.31 final drive gear ratio that was still in the truck..

The only real advantage to leaving gearing as-is, is excellent highway mileage with the motor turning lower RPM's as per 4th and 5th gear. Getting up to that speed on short on-ramps without regearing, can be a bit of work.

If 31s are your final tire size, then stick with 4.10. Plan on going bigger? 32-33, go with 4.56.

My budget I guess you say is pretty big but that doesn’t mean I’m trying to spend a lot of money haha, but it is a manual and I plan on getting 245/75r16 tires, and thanks for replying!! I just don’t want my tacoma being even more painfully slow than it already it haha but I mean climbing dress would be pretty cool too

See the below screen-caps that will help explain things technically.

Unfortunately with the Manual transmission - you need to replace the complete differential with a version that has the correct gearing - the 3.31 differential is non-upgradable. A good source for replacement is taking someone's 4.10 differential from a non-TRD Tacoma, that they may have replaced with an aftermarket differential. Keep an eye on the For Sale forum here.
